was really hoping to keep him around to see some continuity and consistency in the secondary. could be a great DBs coach in a year or two... instead he's joining back up with Muschamp and T-Rob. awesome.

JMO but seems that when Gus started bringing in these off-the field coaches it was not with the intent of bumping them up to the on-field staff. I believe I read somewhere that it was to help these guys break into the college football coaching business....and might have functioned as a long term job interview. Most of them have gone elsewhere and that has not seemed to effect who we hired for the on-field position.

"let him walk out the door" JMO but that's kind of a provocative statement of what happened.

If you were to go back and find early interviews on Gus and he was asked why he brought in the HS coaches for off the field and you are correct, he said it was to give them a chance to learn about the college game and give them a chance to get on the field positions but not necessarily at AU.

i say "let him walk out the door" because he's a guy i felt had a very bright future in coaching and a solid relationship with our current DB's. didn't mean to imply that Gus and Auburn's off-the-field coach philosophy wasn't effective.

just hated to see the guy go is all.

He's a low man on the totem pole and it sounds like he'd rather be in Columbia with Muschamp. If he's really all that great, then he'll be on our radar in the future for higher up positions on staff. We have a lot of good ones come in and out of the AD yearly...we'll be fine without him.

Well, "let him walk out the door" implies that Gus and Coach Steele just sat there and did nothing to try and keep him, which I doubt happened. Gideon's relationship is mainly with Muschamp. He came to Auburn because of CWM and he played under him at Texas. Outside of an on-field position, which we don't have to give, there wasn't much we could do to overcome that.

Lots of people on this board and other places have gotten all bent out of shape over Muschamp "poaching" our staff. They seem to forget that Muschamp is the one who brought them here in the first place.

Not really true of Lance Thompson. They came at the same time, but I don't recall anything about Thompson's hire being linked solely to Will. Robinson was Will's guy at UF and his protege. Lance was a guy Will worked with a long time ago. Thompson got bent out of shape, but Will bringing him to USCe constitutes poaching.

Out of curiosity I tried to find Steele's support staff at LSU. Read that our Ryan Pugh went with Frank Wilson to UTSA as OL coach. Thought folks might be interested.

WDE!

Steele is the DC, he should be able to put together his own defensive staff IMO....both on the field positions and off the field personell.

I've noted a number of times that college coaching is the most incestuous business I've ever heard of. The younger guys hook onto someone like Muscshamp or Richt or whoever....and just follow them from school to school.....getting raises and having safe jobs. We see it working both ways at AU....those who don't leave ....and those who follow some departing coach.

That's life in big time football....where there seems to be an endless pot of money to pay big salaries to young guys who don't seem to have identifiable job responsibilities.

Muschamp is still the guy who brought Thompson to Auburn by hiring him as his LB coach. He would not have been here otherwise. The only coach that Muschamp "poached" would be Bentley and he offered him a promotion.

The coaches he brought in ended up at South Carolina with him plus he got an off field coach who already had state of South Carolina ties in Bentley. So Boom is + 1 on us, that doesn't seem so bad.

Many of us thought Thompson should have been given a shot. He knows the players and I think he has a good relationship with them and recruits. Howver Steele is the man and I support him. I really appreciate LT giving all he had for the bowl game knowing full well he would be leaving. As for Gideon he did an amazing job but we all knew (and Blake too) we would not go with two rookie coaches on KS staff and obviously TW had a lot of supporters and would get that position.

Was that about the time our offense started going downhill?

Guess, as a Family member, I'd prefer nepotism to incest.

'Course, that's a relative thing.
