Academic accomplishments

24 members of the football team were among 66 Auburn student-athletes recognized for their academic accomplishments during the fall semester. And impressive accomplishment and I invite you to check the details...some difficult academic challenges by some members of the football team....and by 42 other young men and women not taking an easy route to an Auburn degree.

Congrats to all of them.

It truly is amazing how these student-athletes accomplish this level given all the demands on their time.

That is a bit much. Student-athletes are given many, many more benefits/perks than regular students in terms of free tutoring and flexible/lenient schedules and many regular students are working to pay their tuition and board. It is a wash at best going by the "demands on their time" excuse especially when you factor in why the student versus student-athlete is attending AU in the 1st place.

mechanical engineering is mechanical engineering whether the guy is playing football or not.

It's really disappointing to see attempts to diminish the academic accomplishments of student-athletes....there was no need to make a comment like this except because of envy perhaps.

Several of these players are walk ons paying their on way. All of these players may get some breaks on scheduling and whatever but they have way more time devoted to their sports than most students have to outside activities. Way to go guys and girls.

I agree about those athletes who are majoring in engineering, business, science and education. Those student-athletes who are truly students have my respect, but I am not going to give them any more praise than the average student at AU especially when they are given more advantages than the average student just because they happen to be athletically gifted. There is no envy in my part. I tutored AU athletes in all sports from 1982-1985 in biology. Pat Dye wanted to win football games and had no interest in how his players performed in the classroom as long as they were eligible to play football.

Ditto. Congrats to these young AU folks.

I'm not talking about how the coaches feel about education....in some cases, the student-athletes have to over-come "resistance" from their coaches ...and yet they still get the job done....and as noted, some of those folks are walk-ons and get few perks from the athletic department.

I'm not giving the coaches' any credit for this.....just saying...enjoy their success and determination to do more than just get by so they can remain eligible....and forget the "yes-but" response.

Some of those curricula are tough going. The Engineering guys are obviously smart and working at it. And kudos to some of those gals on the Soccer and Volleyball teams -- pharmacy, microbial biology, integrative biology, mechanical engineering -- and members of T&F -- biomedical science, computer science, industrial design. Even with tutoring, you gotta pass the exams and do the work well enough to keep progressing.

Back in my day, the Swimming team always had solid students. Now, not a one. Times change.
