Chizik nation's top assistant

Auburn defensive coordinator Gene Chizik began to appreciate the importance of the Frank Broyles Award when he arrived for dinner at the William J. Clinton Presidential Library in Little Rock.

That's where the former president pulled him aside.

"He declared us national champions," Chizik said. "If a guy can make decisions on foreign policy and taxes ... and he declares us national champs, that's one for us right there."

That praise came Monday night. Tuesday, Chizik received another endorsement for his work when he won the Broyles Award, which is given annually to college football's top assistant coach.

The honors didn't stop there for Auburn on Tuesday. Head coach Tommy Tuberville won another national coach of the year award, this time from the American Football Coaches Association in a meeting in Louisville. Tuberville is also a finalist for the Bear Bryant Award, which will be presented Thursday night in Houston.

The Tigers will make more news tonight when All-SEC offensive lineman Marcus McNeill discusses his football future and whether he'll jump to the NFL or return to Auburn for his senior season.

Chizik had strong credentials to be named the nation's top assistant after his third year with the Tigers. Auburn led the nation in scoring defense, allowed just four rushing touchdowns and helped the Tigers to their 13-0 record, the best in school history.

A committee of former coaches made the selection. Chizik received a 100-pound bronze trophy, a $2,500 prize and a set of golf clubs. Chizik is also getting a nice raise. After turning down a reported $270,000 to be North Carolina State's defensive coordinator, Auburn gave him a multiyear contract worth $300,000 a year, making him one of the highest paid assistants in college football.

"We didn't do anything differently than the previous three years," Chizik said. "The kids took it upon themselves to be accountable for what they did and how they played. This award - I want to make sure everybody knows - this is not just a reflection of Gene Chizik. It is a reflection of our coaches ... and the players."

Chizik said he had only a passing knowledge of the Broyles Award before attending the dinner at the Clinton Library and the award banquet that followed.

"I was taken aback by what a big event it really was," he said. "I just feel very appreciative of Auburn and the chance they gave me, and very flattered I was even chosen in the top six, and furthermore to win it."

Chizik said the award is "a great tribute to assistant coaches across the country. Coach Broyles made it very clear his intention is to help guys in this position to get them head coaching jobs. He's in it to promote coaches."

The other finalists were California defensive coordinator Bob Gregory, Oklahoma offensive coordinator Chuck Long, Boise State offensive coordinator Chris Peterson, Iowa defensive coordinator Norm Parker and Connecticut offensive coordinator Norries Wilson.

Tuberville has also been named national coach of the year by the Walter Camp Foundation and The Associated Press. He was also named to the American Football Coaches Association board of trustees Tuesday.

NOW what do I do!!! How can I keep totally hating him after a statement like this???

I guess I can direct all my evil thoughts on that pinko to whom he is “married”.

Of course, he IS a slimy politician – he will say what he thinks people want to hear.

Plus, I am not so sure I liked Clinton’s decisions on foreign policy (we had a policy?) and taxes.

But I like his taste in football!!!

War Eagle!

Here's another article: Link

... Chizik and his wife, Jonna, also secured support for Auburn from former President Bill Clinton at a Monday night dinner at the Clinton Library.

"At the end of the night, he pulled Jonna and me aside and talked to us," Chizik said. "He declared us national champions. If a guy can make decisions on foreign policy and taxes for millions of people, he can declare us national champs. There is one for us right there."  ...

When I first read this, the first thing that popped into my head was Jonna must be good looking. The old horn dog is still up to his old tricks.

A major problem with Clinton has always been his misrepresentation of the facts. There is no way of knowing how many coaches and team officials that he pulled aside and said they are the national champions. Utah too perhaps? Probably telling OU that they just had a bad night, but 9 out of 10 times they would beat USC and that they are number 1 in his book ... this USC game was just a fluke. Probably patting USC on the back while telling them they are the greatest ever.

I stopped placing credibility on anything coming from a Clinton's mouth years ago and will not start back now even if he tries to mount the AU bandwagon. And if he were ever allowed on our bandwagon I would want to get the women and young girls off as fast as possible.

I agree that AU should be the National Champion at least had a chance to play for it.

But as SKCAUB said. Clinton is a loowsy cork sucker and an summamonbeech

ahhh, nice to see a brilliant man continue to display his brilliance even after retirement. i'd also like to add that i think it's real nice of bill to allow bush sr. to sit next to him on tsunami relief commercial despite the fact that bill still overshadows him as bad now as he did in 1992.

Overshadows? PUH-LEEZE!!!!!! Have you actually SEEN that commercial? GHWB is probably 20 years older than Slick and looks twice as good. I was shocked at how bad Clinton looked. All that hard living caught up with Slick at last. He looked horrible, all thin, white headed and sort of shrunken in. In the ones I have seen, he is either crosseyed or not sure which camera is on - he is not focused at all on the camera. He LOOKED like a guy who just had major heart surgery coupled with the asskicking his party took in November. Not sure which made him more sick...
