"Possible candidates to replace Chizik include

University of Pittsburgh defensive coordinator Paul Rhoads, who was a candidate three years ago when Chizik was hired from Central Florida;

Georgia Tech defensive coordinator John Tenuta;

former LSU defensive coordinator and Auburn graduate assistant Will Muschamp;

and University of Miami defensive coordinator Randy Shannon.

Well, Chizik turned the 81st ranked defense in the country into the 16th ranked one down at UCF within 2 years without CTT. I'd say the guy was pretty good.

I like the idea of Coach Shannon or Coach Campo (Not sure if he's one of the ones on CTT's Short list). I'd love it if we got Brent Venables (sp?), because he is the real DC of okie dokie......Then again, seeing how they played in the Orange bowl.....Not really sure. Coach Tubs will bring in someone that will fit into his system.....That's why I like Campo. Anywho, War "BY GOD" Eagle

I agree that Chizik is good but CTT is one of the better DC's in the country by his own right. My point is that I am not too worried about our defense with CTT in charge. I'm a little PO'd at Chizik for his timing. Now if it had been Borges that was leaving...

Don't know much about Rhoads or Pitt's defense, but I like the other three. What are the odds Shannon would leave UM?

Shannon is a Miami native, UM grad who has only worked at UM and the Dolphins. I doubt he's making a lateral move.

rhoads is the guy i said i am terrified of. we offered him the job last time, and he turned us down (b/c pitt told him he was next in line to become a head coach when walt harris left... they've since screwed him and hired wannie). i've seen his defenses play since then a number of times; they ALWAYS look bad. trouble against the run, which leads to safeties misplaying the passing game. utah brutalized them. i don't want rhoads although i honestly don't think he'll be a big candidate this time.

i don't think shannon will come. muschamp would have to pick between the sec (as a dc) and the nfl (as an assistant). most would stay in the league i think. tenuta would be a good pickup or the guys from the browns, pagano or bowles, or campo.... plenty of good names out there.

You gotta also recognize the type of players these coord. are working with....You think that Pitt guy could do good with our defensive players that we have now?

Wayne Bolt really suffered at UAB. He was a good dc for Troy.

59 to HAWAII AND TULANE

But he had Nigel Eldridge and Zac Woodfin.

With Pat Sullivan, scoring points isn't a problem for UAB

i mostly don't like rhoads' system. it's not a true 4-3 defense (which i'm partial to); it's that nonsense we ran for a while with whips and rovers and other crappy tweener positions. i've never seen pitt have a good game defensively in the last 2 years.

I agree completely about CTT-he will always have a good defense. He has what, three? national championships under his belt as DC at Miami.

Is there ever a good time for a coach to leave though? During the season sucks, immediately after the season runs into recruiting. By after signing day, most good candidates are probably already taken. ...and then you're running into spring practice.

Best of luck to Coach Chizik--I wish him nothing but the best, except when/if we play him.
