Guillon: Injury more serious

Tide's backup QB says he had a herniated disk and stress fracture of the back and won't be 100 percent in spring

Wednesday, January 19, 2005

TUSCALOOSA -- University of Alabama quarterback Marc Guillon said Tuesday his back injury was underplayed last season, and that he won't be 100 percent for the start of spring practice Feb. 19.

Guillon said an MRI and CT-scan late in the season discovered a herniated disk and a stress fracture in two lumbar vertebrae in his lower back.

...

Guillon said rumors that he could have played but didn't because he mouthed off after being pulled in the South Carolina game were ridiculous.

"That might be the craziest thing I've ever heard," he said. "Why would I do that to my career and my teammates?"

...

If Guillon is unavailable for spring practice, the Tide will have a second straight spring with quarterback difficulties. Croyle is not expected to take live snaps, and Spencer Pennington, who started the last seven games, left the football program last week.

Walk-ons Adam Thrash and A.J. Milwee and grayshirt John Parker Wilson would be the healthiest quarterbacks next month.

Guillon questions Shula not using him in bowl game

Backup QB says he told Tide coach he could play

Wednesday, January 19, 2005

TUSCALOOSA - Alabama quarterback Marc Guillon said Tuesday that he remains puzzled over coach Mike Shula keeping him on the bench last month in the Music City Bowl.

Spencer Pennington, the starting quarterback, sustained a concussion in the first half and was dizzy and nauseous at halftime, his mother Donna said last week.

Guillon said he knew Pennington was shaken up and that his stomach was upset.

Guillon had not played since Oct. 2 because of a back injury. But he said he could have played in the 20-16 loss to Minnesota in the bowl game.

"Yeah, I could've," Guillon said. "To be honest, I don't know why Coach Shula didn't put me in. I told him I was ready to go. I think Coach Shula even said to the media that I was ready to go. So I don't know what his deal was with that. You might want to ask him."

Shula was on a recruiting trip Tuesday night and not available for comment.

Guillon, a rising junior, said that his back was still healing and that he hoped to be 100 percent when spring practice starts Feb. 22.

"It's taken a little longer than I expected," Guillon said of his recovery. "But I'm well on my way back to 100 percent."

So will he be ready when Spring Training starts or not? ...and he didn't mouth off after the South Carolina game, but he questions Shula now?

...curious...

That's not contradicting. He's not expected to be 100%, but he hopes to be. It doesn't take a genius to figure that out... Try re-reading the article next time guys...

As for the start date, how about blaming the WRITER for having the WRONG INFORMTION. Neither article quotes him as saying what day is the start of spring practice.

Strey, I think the big contradiction here are the "Quotes" from Guillion. He's quoted by one writer as saying yea, I could have played and I don't know why Coach wouldn't put me in and then being quoted as saying there's no way I would have said that. There's a big problem somewhere, whether it's with Guillion, the writers or with Shula. Someone ain't tellin' the truth. I don't have a clue who it is and I'm not assuming it's any of them but the fact is, someone's not being straight here.

Spencer Pennington seems to have decided to pursue baseball at Bama. That is his sport. Looking at the competition at QB, I can understand why. That, as far as I know, is the only change at QB for the Tide. Some have said Guillon might not be back, but that remains to be seen. If the kid has herniated disk, I feel for him. It ain't easy to overcome. Been there, done that. He didn't look like a world beater this season, but if he was hurt (who wasn't?), that would make a huge difference. As to the two quotes, I just don't know.

Yea, who knows who's not being straight here. The local sports talk guy was really going on about the quotes and what kind of injuries MG really had. He was reading something that indicated Guillion has had back problems since his sophomore season in HS. That's about 5 years of back problems at age 21. That ain't good if that is the case. I simply cannot see playing major college football with herniated discs. And those don't just repair themselves by the way.

I agree that it could be the writers, not Guillon or anyone associated with the teams, that are giving apparently contradictory stories. Certainly the same two papers had conflicting stories just a few weeks ago that CTT was /was not interested in the LSU job.

But if Guillon's words are accurately quoted, they do sound a bit wishy-washy to me. I'm not quite what this means in terms of his injury or his relationship with Shula. And again, it may be simply a case of reporters screwing up. In any case, it certainly looks like Bama could use some extra quarterbacks. [...or, some would say, a quarterback! :P ]

I wish Guillon the best, however. Hope everything works out for him, health-wise.

If Guillion ever plays another down in a regular season game for UAT I will send every bammer on this bioard $10. He and Shula have had it with each other and everyone in the know at bama knows that.

Aww now, don't even suggest doing that--if word gets out that there is even a hint of payola available here, we might get flooded with Bammers! :big:

PT- Your original offer was made with no request for reciprocation. It's win-win for me and BG. :D :D :D

And sorry for the delay between posts, it gets difficult remembering exactly which threads I post in without the graphical reminders that have been disabled. I do my best, but I miss a few now and then.

We have to find depth at center, UAT is in serious trouble at QB. Brodie will not play an entire season and currently they have no serious depth at QB. Gulwing is a loser and even Miami realized the mistake. That could develop into another killer season for UAT. I feel that QB is the hardest position to develop along with the O line. I look for another lackluster season from them. Anybody else have any thoughts on how 05 is looking?

My offer is still good. I was just checking your confidence. I see it's zero :big:

There was an article in the Huntsville Times about Guillion (actually an interview). He in essence called Shula a liar and said he couldn't understand why he didn't get to play in the Music City Bowl. He said Pennington had a mild concussion, was sick in the locker room at halftime, and was in no condition to play. He questioned Shula's decision to let him play. Guillion went on to say that even after Shula knew he had a hairline fracture of his back(?) and a herniated disc, Shula still said it was just a muscle tear. This interview was don by the paper's bama beat writer so I assume it's pretty factual.
