sevenDs 0
There has to be a better way. I don't mean for crowning a Nation Champion in NCAA Division I college football. And I'm not talking about a playoff or a Plus 1 system. Nor am I addressing the AP and Coaches Poll voting process. I want to save our dignity. Yes, we got the shaft. Yes, the system is wrong. Yes, I beleive we could be So. Cal. But I'm the first to admit that we will never know. When other college football fans and the media tell us "accept it" or "deal with it" they usually point out that So Cal proved it. But So Cal didn't. Neither did we and neither did Utah. I have realized that by reacting on the defensive, and in many cases offensively, we give credence the the theory that there is an acceptable process to rebel against. But we know that there isn't. What do we know? 1. Primarily we know that Auburn, So Cal and Utah all went undefeated. 2. We know which team in each conference are the conference champions. 3. We know that So Cal won the BCS national Champonship and was voted AP National Champion. (I stress the "BCS" and "AP" designations on those titles, and believe we all should when discussing the matter.) 4. We know that the BCS and AP are the most accepted of the designations for NCAA Division I Champions. 5. We also know that just because something is widely and publicly accepted doesn't make it true. We also know, among other subjects that I won't bring up here, that the Earth is round. What don't we know? 1. Who would win in a So Cal, Auburn, Utah playoff. Yes, we have opinions, but nothing is known until it happens; sorry Nostradomus fans. 2. Why the ESPN Gameday crew repeated pointed out how flawed the BCS system is in late November, then in early December they stated how well it worked this year. 3. Why the NCAA allows other divisions to hold a football playoff, but not Division I. (yes, I have theories based on deductive reasoning, but there's no way to prove them) Our University is primarily a science based institution. We should be holding out for the truth, not unproven theories and opinions. Our only response to our critics should be "It was never proven on the field?" And on our turf, i.e. this board and other AU boards, we shouldn't have to justify our pride to outsiders. But we also shouldn't go to other boards (mainly So Cal and Utah) and try to rain on their parade either. We can't prove each other wrong. Thanks to the NCAA, truth and reality isn't a factor in determining the Division I champion. I'm all for supporting the team with the "Number 1" label. I'm even for wearing shirts stating something to the effect of "Auburn Tigers 2004: the best team in America!" But this whole "National Champion" debate is pointless. I don't care if we get that distinction. It's merely mythical at its very best and has lost what little credibility it had the past two years. As far as having pride in our season, we shouldn't have to "let it go." But for the "anti-Auburn" commentary and the backhanded comliments like "be proud of your season, but you weren't as good as So Cal" brought to us by opposing fans and the media, maybe we should let that go. You made absolutely no sense......Thank you sevenDs, now everyone that reads this little article is Dumber than if they had skipped past it...........Just Kiddin', I agree with you. I really don't think anyone should be called National Champions in DI until we get some sort of playoff......(#1 vs. #3, #2 vs. #4) or a 10 team playoff, Something.....Anything, would work/help. sevenDs 0
Thanks. The unrequested and needless negative commentary about our coach and team is very frustrating to put it nicely. But I don't know what frustrates me more, the comments themselves or the fact they get to me so much. I relaize I could have saved server space if I would have said that initially.
