Letter To The Editor

Recently, Phil Paramore, a local sports talk show host and writer for the Dothan Eagle, wrote a column about Spencer Pennington and his leaving football because of the concussions, etc. A letter to the editor followed this morning in response and I was absolutely stunned that the paper even printed this garbage. However, it does say something about the mindset of what is hopefully a very small percentage of football crazed fans in the south. I apologize for no link but I am virtually computer illiterate and have no clue how to do it. Shouldn't be too hard to access today's paper for "The Dothan Eagle." The pertinent part of the letter is as follows:

"I am referring, of course, to the insane gibberish that was put forth in the Jan. 15 edition of the paper by the "esteemed" columnist, Phil Paramore when he suggested that Alabama's hapless excuse for a replacement quarterback, Spencer Pennington, deserved praise - that's right - praise for his performance at the helm of the Tide offense."

"Let's not kid ourselves here, Phil, Pennington should fall down on his knees with gratitude that he was lucky enough to have ever taken a snap for the glorious Crimson Tide of Alabama."

"...Pennington should be driven out of the state like a diseased animal for his rotten performance this season, and so should Phil for that matter, for suggesting that bungling swine deserves praise!"

"Has Alabama really fallen that far?" Joey Edgar, Ozark

:no::no::no::no::no:

Now I don't post this to insinuate that all Bama fans are this way. There has been a lot of discussion on this board recently about name calling and berating college kids. I'm not a Bama fan but I have respect for Pennington and his efforts under tough circumstances and the fact that we now know he was playing injured as well. There is no place for attitudes like this guy has and I find it downright scary that there are actually people walking around who take this stuff that seriously.

Most Alabama fans do not feel that way at all. Spencer Pennington gave his all on the field, and improvement was seen in his performance. Was he a stellar QB, no. But he displayed heart, determination, and honor on and off the field. This BAMA fan thinks that no more could be asked of the young man, and I wish him the best in all his endeavors.

Idiots like this need to suit up and get out there and get their behinds busted a few times by some DE or LB...and then tell me about Pennington's shortcomings!!! MORON! I played some football from Pee Wee, to HS, to no pads, sandlot tackle...and sometimes you get clobbered. But I never got hit by some 250 lb steam engine with a one track mind like the qb's do today! Ignorant, is all I can assume of this...this...person....

That guy is a complete idot! But, that's typical bammer arrogance in so many cases. From his standpoint if bammer loses a game then someone needs to be shot. He wouldn't last very long on this forum. :roflol::D;)

People are passionate about their teams. I know I am about my support for Auburn. Very few times do you run across someone with an obsession like this that would stoop to referring to a college kid as a diseased animal or bungling swine because he didn't lead his team to victory.

You know, I thought that too but the guy really attacks Paramore throughout for writing it in the first place. He spews as much venom toward the paper and the sports writer as he does at Pennington.

If I were a bama fan, I would:

1. Look in the Dothan area phone book and see if there was a listing for Joey Edgar (anyone stupid enough to write such a letter probably is proud of it and gave hisa real name).

2. If therer was a number, I would call him and pretend to agree with him but in the process ask enough questions to determine if he really was a bama fan.

3. I would then tell him........(not allowed here) :big:

Oh, man ... that was too funny! I swear bammie fans must be part cannibal the way they eat their own. Spencer Pennington started 8 games for them last year and you still heard their (so-called) fans referring to him as their "3rd string QB" even up to their bowl game. Correct me if I'm wrong but if a QB is starting a game doesn't that make him the #1 QB? A QB with a bum knee that can't go on the field ain't the #1 or starting QB. Pennington started 8 games. That's 2/3 of the total season's games. Small wonder he's taking up baseball. Who needs that kind of ingratitude?
