Good Jobs Are Out There – It’s the Schools that Are Failing

This is a disturbing story. I would be interested in our resident teachers view on the piece.

I am not a teacher, although my wife is and I see this crap everyday. She hates it as do most teachers, they are being forced to teach the "common core" way and it is horrible. I have two daughters and I see it when trying to help them on their homework. My youngest is in 3rd grade and the way they are teaching math is atrocious. The article is about right when it says 108 (exaggerating) steps to do a 2 step problem....some of hers she has to do in 15 steps and I was taught to do it in 3. When I try to show her how to do it in 3 steps she gets upset because she says she will get in trouble if she does it the way I show her.

Then they focus so much on the STAAR tests they lose out on basics they should really be teaching and the whole time the kids are getting stressed out because literally from when they get into elementary school they have it grilled into their head that this test is the most important thing on the planet. We have actually thought about opting our youngest out.

I am not against standardized testing, but the way it is now force fed to everyone is ridiculous. The school districts all want to wave their passing scores and move up kids that are failing to the next level and act how wonderful they are. These days it is almost impossible to fail a kid, they teachers now have so much burden to prove that they gave them like a million tries to pass before they can fail them. Also, my wife works in the district my kids go to and our youngest is dyslexic and it was a fight for us to get her the accommodations she needed to get on the right path.

Understand. Teaching your children today is like teaching baseball i.e. They learn it in the backyard. Good stuff but sad.
