You can't even make this stuff up.

The Declaration of Independence is one of the most cherished documents in the United States. We even make movies about it like it’s the Ark of the Covenant. But some Trump supporters were a bit confused yesterday, and saw phrases like “unworthy the Head of a civilized nation” as biased. They assumed that NPR was blasting the current president rather than King George in 1776.

NPR has been reading the Declaration of Independence on air in a tradition that dates back 29 years. And in fairness, the Declaration of Independence is a pretty anti-authoritarian document. So it makes sense that people might believe that it’s a statement against all tyrants.

But you’d think that people who want to “make America great again” might recognize the words of the Declaration of Independence. I guess not.

Good point but likely a tribute to our education system which has about abandoned teaching young Americans about the founding of this country.  I wonder what the last HS graduating class in the US where students actually read the Declaration of Independence and were tested on it's contents ?

On the other hand, lots of people are suspicious of NPR which is rarely motiveless in the things it programs.   They say they have been reading it for 29 years but did not say how many years prior to this they have tweeted it....and to be honest, breaking up the D of I into 140 character bites leaves a lot to be desired and creates plenty of opportunity for out of context misunderstandings.   JMO.

As far as education goes, we've shifted to teaching students information to pass standardized testing and have such strict time constraints that content is often glossed over or completely overlooked. This is what happens when educators are not involved in decisions and instead people like Betsy Devos make decisions.

On the other hand I can see how lines from the DOI about a tyrant could be mistaken as referring to Trump.

You do recall that Devos has been on the job just a few months don't you ?

Maybe you forgot that Obama's appointees were on the job the past 8 years...and any of the problems you just mentioned should properly laid on his doorstep....certainly you know that...even if you can't bring yourself to admit it.

"rarely motiveless"?

I suppose anything thoughtful and literate on the airwaves is liberal, huh?

I recall that Devos  has no experience in education. But I wasn't laying the problem at her feet, merely pointing out that it won't change under someone who despises public education. If you want to cast blame it starts at the state level anyway.

Just curious, but what's your statute of limitations going to be on the "But Obama" defense?
