SEC Football: LSU closes practices to media during fall camp.

SEC football coaches carefully guard media access to practices. Ed Orgeron is going further, shutting down media access to all of LSU’s fall camp practices.

Among the 14 SEC football schools, media access to football practices is tightly controlled. Most schools, including Alabama football, offer limited viewing periods.

Kentucky and Vanderbilt deviate somewhat in offering the longest viewing periods. Yet, they do so at only a small number of practice sessions. Some schools mandate the media cannot report on injured players or update depth charts based on the designated viewing periods.

Alabama football holds an open practice for fans each fall. Alabama Fan Day this season will be August 5 and includes access to a full practice session. Any exposure, even limited, is valued by fans.

Ed Orgeron and LSU will be providing no such access this fall. Per nola.com, LSU announced on Friday,

all preseason practices will be closed to media and public, marking a departure from past seasons, including the spring when LSU allowed media limited access to at least a handful of those practice sessions.
Denying access to practices is not uncommon in college football. It is unusual for a SEC football coach so focused on spinning a new narrative about his team.

There are good reasons for Ed Orgeron’s decision. LSU has a new offense under Matt Canada. Canada has not installed all of the offense yet. There is value keeping it under wraps until the season opener.

Proud Cajun fans will not happy

LSU fans, already nervous about offensive ineptitude in the spring game, will stew even more. Doubt about quarterback Danny Ettling and worry about the health of Arden Key will grow with limited new information.

Is LSU so fearful of BYU in the opening game, that secrecy is necessary? Coach O will never admit to that. Nevertheless, hiding a team from view is a timid approach for a SEC football program proud of past heroisms.

We got a new oc too but I'd be pissed if we couldn't get some kind of info...Gus with his stubborn self could have easily done this.

College football coaches encourage fans to be part of the "family" when they need their money to buy season tickets and fill the stadium for useless spring games that aren't even real scrimmages. Then, they cut off basically all access to reporters and fans in the guise of protecting their team from "distractions."

Meanwhile the NFL encourages fans to come sit in the bleachers to watch practices in the fall. Sure they hold some stuff back I'm sure, but they at least give fans an opportunity to see some action.

Finebaum - "the point of practice is for the media to watch"

aaaahhhh so it's not to get better fundamentally and install the game plan for that weeks opponent? Go crawl back under Sabans desk smegal.

I'd have no problem if Gus chose to shut down his practices completely.  Screw the media, let 'em starve for pre-season information and force them to turn their attention to other programs for their weekly print quota.

Could mean nothing, but the only times I've ever heard of a coach shutting things down completely is when they were struggling and didn't need their players dealing with the extra pressure of media pointing out their deficiencies.

Media doesn't need access anyway - they are going to write what they want from the slant they want to give it.

Pro-LSU:  Practice closed to media, Coach O has juggernaut and doesn't want SEC opponents to see it too early

Con-LSU: Practice closed to media, must be issues with gameplan, player injuries

ANd heck, I'm not even a "journalist" or even cares about LSU other than for AU to beat them.

Look for LSU to choke and sputter all season as the love for Coach "O" goes down the Cajun outhouse after eating tainted crawfish at a crawfish boil.

As long as Auburn isn't choking and sputtering like we have the last 3 yrs, then I'll be happy to see another program take to the outhouse.

you have  a point my friend!  I hope we play every game with the success we had vs. Arky last year except with 245 yards through the air and 255 yards on the ground average for the season

Canada has had some success here and there, but has been pretty much a journeyman OC and has bounced around a good deal. He was run out of NC State. He did have some good numbers at Pitt last season. However, he had a superior QB there compared to what he has at LSU.  I think LSU will have around an 8-5 type season. If it comes in at 6-6 or worse, Coach "O" will be on a super hot, hot seat for 2018.  I like Coach "O" but am not sold on him as being a Les Miles caliber W/L type of coach.

I think most people who have LSU as a serious contender are looking at 3 things. First, they might actually have the best running back in the league. Second, coach O knows how to have a stifling D, and he doesn't really need to build, just maintain on that front. Third, Canada doesn't even have to have a top in the SEC offense, he just needs to make them more than they were last year to make a serious impact.

I think LSU will struggle, some, this year, but I think they are going to bring it every game and no one is going to have an easy go against them.

It's amazing how close LSU was to possibly getting a shot at the playoff last year. If three plays go the other way (or two plays and Sankey makes Florida play that game Sunday or Monday night (10/9 or 10/10) in Gainesville)...

It's a game of inches.

^Yeah, they have 5 SEC away games as well--and one of the non-away games is a neutral site. We're their biggest home game.

Last year's scheduling debacle really, really angered me. Foley was able to manipulate the SEC offices, when in 2005 in the same situation, LSU played a Monday night game. USCe and Georgia played on Sunday. FSU and Miami played that Saturday! As did NC State and ND, and they played in the storm!

Hmmm sounds like it could be more serious

Maybe just the Panthers but I've been to a couple of their practices and they show NOTHING......mostly walked through plays, did not go full speed and of course they would  never let anyone hit Cam.   Meanwhile, they have far more hours to work on their game strategy in closed areas.

JMO but absolutely no reason to let media into practices once the first whistle blows.   Most of them are looking for some scoop to print and they are not friends of AU. ......which is why I'm always surprised at the griping about the AU beat writers......as if their job is to promote the program.

Let 'em learn whatever they can from coach and player interviews and then come to the games on their free passes..   JMO
