The Alabama black caucus will possibly boycott :au: athletics.

As some of you may have guessed, Alvin Holmes is a member :poke:

This is apparently from the firing of the 2 black men that were fired from the ad.

The white man must fend on his own :poke:

Black caucus calls on athletes to boycott Auburn

2/24/2005, 6:16 p.m. CT

By BOB JOHNSON

The Associated Press

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — The Alabama Legislature's Black Caucus has asked black athletes to refuse to attend Auburn University until the school agrees to rehire two black administrators fired in a reorganization of the athletic department.

The Black Caucus voted unanimously Thursday to ask black athletes from across the country to boycott Auburn's athletic teams.

"We asked athletes to boycott Auburn until this issue is resolved because of the money going into Auburn from sports. It's the black athletes responsible for that. When you look at the football team, that's what you see," said Rep. Laura Hall, D-Huntsville, chairwoman of the Black Caucus.

The caucus met last week with Auburn President Ed Richardson and asked him to rehire associate athletic director Stacy Danley and assistant Athletic Director Eugene Harris, even if they had to be placed in positions outside the athletic department. Both were fired earlier this month by Athletic Director Jay Jacobs as part of a restructuring of the department. Assistant Athletic Director Marvin Julich, who is white, was also fired.

Richardson sent the caucus a letter outlining efforts by university officials to address the issue of diversity on the mostly white campus, but he did not commit to rehiring Danley and Harris.

"Auburn University is working in good faith to increase diversity on this campus. We have a comprehensive diversity plan that is nearly completed, and have already begun to implement segments of that plan," university spokeswoman Deedie Dowdle said Thursday in response to the caucus's call for a boycott.

She said 347 blacks were among Auburn's new students in the fall of 2004.

"Auburn is committed to their success and the success of all African American students, athletes included," Dowdle said.

Richardson was off campus Thursday and could not be reached for comment. In his letter to the caucus, however, he said that since the restructuring, there are 22 black employees in the athletic department, including one member of the senior management team. Richardson said in the letter that he is convinced the restructuring of the athletic department was based on "our goal of serving our student athletes" and was not racially motivated.

State Rep. Alvin Holmes, D-Montgomery, said black lawmakers were upset that Richardson did not specifically respond to the request to rehire Danley and Harris.

He said the caucus does not expect athletes already at Auburn to leave their teams.

"We're just asking those being recruited not to come to Auburn," Holmes said. "When people look at a football game or a basketball game on television, they get the impression there are lots of blacks working at Auburn, and that's not the case."

It is time for white people to boycott too. Hell, we had one fired and none promoted. WE REALLY GOT SCREWED!!!!

148166[/snapback]

See they don't see it that way. Even though 2 were fired and 2 were promoted, they feel they didn't gain anything. They have to gain something. That provost guy said it himself.

when asked about the 2 black guys that got promoted, he quickly said" 2 guys were fired, 2 guys were promoted. Nothing was gained"

But they are out there saying the firing of the white guy was justified and the firing of the black guys were not.

God, this is really upsetting me. Alvin needs to be told off. Most of the politicians don't have the testicular fortitude to step up and tell him to sit down because they're afraid they'll be labeled the dreaded RACIST. Although I wonder if Alvin assumes all whites are RACISTS.

I will give Kudos for Richardson for not even compromising with Holmes.

Because there was no need for compromise. Holmes definition for compromise is like his interpretation of the bible on marriage

i'm convinced al quaeda was behind the whole deal. Blacks gained nothing. Whites got screwed.

I heard the whole we gained nothing deal.

All jacobs and richardson are guilty of is using logic and common sense. They were probably thinking, "Well, we are firing two black guys, but we are also promoting 2. While we are firing one white guy and promoting none. Not to mention that last summer I (richardson) put out a release that we would be honing down the athletic dept. so that it would run mean and lean. I mean there is no way anyone will scream racism, right?"

The biggest mistake jj made imho was not meeting with the firees first and letting them find out via press conference. That was pretty uncool.

Be careful when mentioning that you think white people should boycott anything - you'll be labeled a RACIST and your organization will be likened to the Klan. Whites can't protest  :moon:

What is really silly is that you have to think twice before even calling someone a black person. No one hesitates to say white person.

I am all for the equal and fair treatment of all people. Some of this racism stuff just seems so irrational to me though.

BTW , totally joking about the boycott stuff go AU, please don't sick jesse on me    . I can't afford to pay him off  .

Yes, affirmitive action is needed in Nascar :P

Also, Mike Hubbard couldn't tell Phil Snow that his services were no longer needed, so the Media Guide had to tell him.

Let's sue Holmes for reverse discrimination!

No idea but I would guess that Holmes is a bammer as well.

No need to worry about this, the players on Auburn's teams will let the recruits know if racisim is rampant at Auburn. :au:

Let's remember the love and respect that we all have for Ronnie-Carnell-Jason-Carlos-etc....

Just because some racial idiots are behind this act does not make it a "black & white thing". THAT is what they would wish to happen. Let's not give them the satisfaction.

http://www.montgomeryadvertiser.com/NEWSV5...5ONCAUCUS25.htm

he Alabama Legislative Black Caucus wants all black athletes to rule out the possibility of attending Auburn University.

Caucus members are calling for a nationwide boycott of Auburn athletics because the AU athletic department fired two black administrators as part of a reorganization. One white administrator also was fired in the restructuring of the department.

"Next season, when they get ready to recruit football players and basketball players, we are asking black athletes not to come to Auburn University and to go to other schools until Auburn University can resolve the issue of discrimination against the employment of blacks," said Rep. Alvin Holmes, D-Montgomery, and head of the civil rights section of the Legislative Black Caucus.

Last week, the 35-member caucus asked AU Interim President Ed Richardson to rehire associate athletic director Stacy Danley and assistant athletic director Eugene Harris or place the two men in other positions with salaries equivalent to their former positions. The group also asked Richardson to provide a racial breakdown of Auburn University's athletic department.

In a written memorandum to the panel this week, Richardson provided the breakdown, but didn't say whether he would rehire the two black employees. Dissatisfied with that response, caucus members unanimously voted Thursday to declare a boycott.

Richardson offered no immediate response Thursday, but Deedie Dowdle, an Auburn University spokeswoman, said the university is "working in good faith to increase diversity on this campus."

"We have a comprehensive diversity plan that is nearly completed and have already begun to implement segments of that plan," Dowdle said. "The university wants to increase the participation of African Americans on our campus, so we hope that everyone, including our elected officials, will support our plan to achieve that goal."

In his memorandum, Richardson also pointed to the college's diversity plan. He noted, too, that the athletic department reorganization resulted in the first black representation in the department's senior management ranks.

A black employee of the department was promoted to senior associate athletic director for student services. A second black person has been promoted to assistant athletic director for compliance, the interim president said.

Again, the Legislative Black Caucus was unimpressed.

Holmes said the caucus is contacting the Congressional Black Caucus and several civil rights groups, including the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the Rev. Jesse Jackson's Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, and the Rev. Al Sharpton's National Action Network.

"We want them to join with the Alabama Legislative Black Caucus in asking black players not to go to Auburn University to play football and basketball until they resolve the racial problem up there as it relates to the employment of blacks," Holmes said.

Some caucus members want the boycott to extend beyond the athletics program.

"We should not limit ourselves to athletics," said state Rep. Eric Major, D-Fairfield, who would rather see the boycott extended to the entire university.

At least one other caucus member suggested the college be punished financially.

"Research grants come through the Legislature," said Rep. John Rogers, D-Birmingham. "You can really drive a stake through their heart."

OK! I am sorry, I am not racist but I have to vent for a minute.

These people think they can do anything they want to get the outcome they want. They are even talking about putting a financial burden on AU by not giving them any grants. That is just RIDICULOUS. I am so fed up right now, I will be making a call to Alvin Holmes office today. I can't stand it. I am also going to call around and try to ask the WHITE Rep. why that are not coming forward and sticking up for AU.

We all really need to call the newspaper or the TV station and have an organized meeting somewhere and get all the publicity we can. I don't care what people think, we just can't stand around and let this happen. Someone wanna write the newspaper and the TV station and get something going?

This Sh*t is getting way out of control. If they want to talk about diversity they need to skip on over to Athens, Ga and ask them about the diversity on thier campus. Someone needs to put this ahole in his place. It is rediculous that they think that they can go around and accuse everyone of being racist the problem is they are the only ones keeping it alive b/c they continue to make all these false accusation that make them look like dumb azzes.

Guys, the problem we have is that crooked guys (Especially Alvin freaking Holmes) see an opportunity to stir up trouble. Alvin is the most crooked, dirty, unethical politician in the state of Alabama. But he stays put. The problem isnt at AU...it never was. The problem is US, as Alabama voters, allowing guys like that to stay in politics.

Guys like him look for any and every opportunity to bring up race. They also look for any and every opportunity to get their name in the paper...for something other than a DUI.

I hate this for AU. Its not their fault. They were merely trimming back administration costs. Now they have state government trying to MANDATE that they hire people based on color instead of skillset or need for the position. Its not fair. Wouldnt be fair if it happened to UA ...so its not fair if it happens to AU.

I hate crooked politicians. And I hate em worse when they are in my state.

They are talking about whites being racist...That's BULLS***! They are the racist mf'ers who keep bringing up the race issue with everything. They think we owe them something? I don't owe them a ****ing thing...

Sorry everybody, I have just had enough and they have really pushed my buttons with this article...I am going to call WSFA and ask them why they don't show the white's reaction to all of this...

I hate it, too. It is extremely frustrating. We all just have to try to remember that not all black people feel this way or act this way. In fact, they think acting like this is plain dumb.

Now, for these other people that have nothing better to do with their lives except to stir things up, well, I am willing to bet that they are miserable litte pricks that never get any.

I think I'm going to move back to Alabama and start the Legislative White Caucus. I find it comical that the LBC would dissuade potential student athletes from coming to Auburn, would they rather have them hop the border and go to :om: ?

I understand that not all blacks act that way. I work with about 20 black ladies that I would go up to and hug all day long, because they present themselves well and they act like human beings.

I understand there are whites that act just as bad as Alvin Holmes...

There is always a group of people in every race that everyone is ashamed of...but come on...Asking the legislature to stop giving grants to Auburn because they let 2 black people go? I wish I could go back in the past two years and see how many whites have been fired and how many blacks?

If Alvin Holmes and the Black CarcASS want to whine and gripe about these two mens jobs, why don't they give them a job at Mr. Holmes office? or with the Black CarcASS?

Alvin Holmes is just trying to make himself look good from the DUI he recieved last year...although, he is making himself look like an ass!

And oh good lord almight, he mentioned the name! Jesse Jackson...here comes rallies and protests...

This line CRACKS ME UP!!!!!!!!!

"We asked athletes to boycott Auburn until this issue is resolved because of the money going into Auburn from sports. It's the black athletes responsible for that. When you look at the football team, that's what you see," said Rep. Laura Hall, D-Huntsville, chairwoman of the Black Caucus.

Yea well these same "black athletes" are responsible for our horrible football teams in the past as well. It's a combination of athletes and coaching dumbass.

Man, Brandon Cox must of turned black or something. Cuz next year I believe we will have a.... WHITE QB... the most important position in the game. I believe we had some lineman last year that were white (Bret Eddins, Danny Lindsay). Yea, most FOOTBALL players are black, but not all. And black athletes... hell I don't see any on the swim team. When it comes down to it, yea black athletes out number the whites, but the whites are pretty smart and stay out of trouble for the most part.

These are the kind of guys that give Black people a bad reputation. I hope anyone who actually believes this crap burns on a stake because they are racist a**holes who don't know the meaning of $h!+

I'm sick of this "We have been wronged and we demand that the world stop spinning" crap. The BC needs to shut up and sit down because as far as I can tell from reading and actually attending Auburn University, the firings were not racially motivated, and the black students are not being persecuted. To tell black athletes to boycott AU because two black men lost their jobs is moronic at best. I'm sure black athletes all across the the nation follow what the Alabama Legislative Black Caucus says to the LETTER. And another thing, Alvin Holmes needs to worry more about the sad state of affairs at Alabama State and how it has become the laughing stock of the academic community nation wide. I guess he rather get drunk and get behind the wheel of an automobile, yep that stellar behavior makes me wanna believe he is a credible upstanding person who is qualified to tell young men not to go to a particular educational institution. I'm getting off my soapbox now and hiding it from Jesse.

i'm not even going to state my opinion on this, but i think all of you that said i was blowing jacobs' mistake out of proportion should take another look at the situation. and i don't think jj's biggest mistake was not meeting with someone. i think it was taking a job that's too much for him to handle. the only thing he has us in the news for is ducking fresno state and boycott request. bang up job.
