Kevin Steele earns FootballScoop.com's defensive coordinator of the year award

Brandon Marcello

AUBURN, Alabama — Kevin Steele is a popular man these days on the Plains and across the nation.

The Auburn defensive coordinator was interviewed twice for the head coaching job at Tennessee, finished among the finalists for the Broyles Award and is busy recruiting after leading one of the nation's top-10 scoring defenses in the regular season.

On Thursday, he picked up his first individual award: FootballScoop.com's defensive coordinator of the year. The winner is selected by the award's last nine winners.

Auburn finished 10th nationally in scoring defense and ninth in yards per play. The Tigers have finished in the top 10 of scoring defense in each of Steele's two seasons as the coordinator. He previously served at LSU, Clemson and Alabama as a coordinator during his 38-year coaching career.

His defense this season held Georgia to a season-low 48 rushing yards and Clemson scored a season-low 14 points against the Tigers' defense. Both teams are in the College Football Playoff. His defense also helped pave the way for victories against then-No. 1 teams Georgia and Alabama near the end of the regular season. The Tigers advanced to the SEC Championship Game and lost to Georgia.

No. 7 Auburn (10-3) is set to face No. 12 UCF (12-0) in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl on New Year's Day. Kickoff is set for 11:30 a.m. CT on ESPN inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
