Rod and Stan

As most would agree its always preferable to listen to our guys do the play by play than the TV people.

They always do an excellent job along with Ronnie on the sideline (shout out to his predecessor "Q"), and input

from Jason Campbell also. BUT it seems they are really struggling to adjust to their new press box position in the corner, seems like an odd location.

Anyway more than once Rod hasn't been able to tell the amount of the gain, loss or ball spot when in the North end of the field.

Guess they are going to have to put a spotter at that end of the field so the guys can get a good view.

Frustration is evident with this offense. Makes for a difficult task to do the play by play.

The entire Auburn Network crew does an outstanding job and enjoy listening to them, go by and see them before each home game near Cam's statue.

The future of broadcast television would be having the option to pick your own commentator on the television with someone syncing things up.

Three options:

1. National Commentator (presumably neutral

2. Home team commentators

3. Visiting commentators

It can’t be that hard to do and then ESPN and others would really have to step up their commentating game to earn listeners.

Edit: Seriously though - do we have any audio of Rod screaming "GOOOOOAAAAALLLLLL!!!" :D

They do this on MLB.TV and it's amazing. Worth the money to listen to the STL guys instead of Skip Caray or whatever his name is on FSSouth

I'm sorry, but Rod just doesn't do it for me. In my lifetime, I have listened to (in order of preference):

1. Jim Fyffe/Pat Sullivan/Charlie Trotman/Stan White

2. Gary Sanders/Gusty Yearout

3. Paul Ellen/Mike Kolen/Phil Snow

4. Rod Bramblett/Stan White

Now, before anyone gets their jockstrap sideways, hear me out.

Rod is an excellent baseball pbp and does ok with basketball. Football pbp is a challenge for him. Where Rod loses me is his style of pbp is to call the game instantaneously, that is, immediately as it happens before his eyes. The good ones, and the great ones like Fyffe, give the action an ever-so-slight opportunity to develop first before they relay it to the listener which makes the action seamless and without the stuttering of mistakes as Rod often does. Sometimes, I can't even tell which side of the field the action is on or visualize where the ball is  (unless I'm syncing him with the tv). Go back and listen/watch the Go crazy Cadillac highlight. When Caddy cuts outside toward the sidelines, Rod says he cuts inside. Yes, that was his first year so he gets a mulligan for that...but he still does it from time to time.

I think he is a fine person, I just don't prefer his play-by-play.

Nothing wrong with your opinion nor reasoning at all.

I like Rod & Stan just fine but you're correct, in that Rod is not as refined in his calling of the game.  I, too, think of Jim Fyffe as no. 1, as he "painted a picture" while calling the game.  I miss him.

My assumption is the longer Bramblett does the job the better he'll be.  Plus, I'll still take them over 99% of the chuckleheads that call ESPN games today.

I get it, but I also love the pure excitement Rod brings with his pbp because he's calling it as it's happening. :)

Rod is an excellent baseball pbp....

Success the last two years has helped, but he gets so down in the mouth with the baseball broadcast when we don't play well.  Rarely gets emotional, just very matter of fact and totally understated.  I would like for him to get pissed off and express it every now and then.  He will do it a little bit with the umpires....

I thought this too after the first game. I wonder if they could install a camera at midfield that would allow them to see everything better

I was able to ask Stan this very question. Stan said they have a fifty yard line monitor by Rod spends more time with binoculars. He believes they will get used to the corner and that corner press boxes are the coming standard in many stadiums. Fifty yard line suites bring in a lot more money.

I don't understand why they did not keep the radio booth where it was. The layout of the old press box had the radio booth, a TV booth, two coaches booths, and the large open print press booth in the middle. The radio, TV, and coaches booths were at the ends and could be closed up. I guess there also was a visiting team radio booth.

I know the new layout has two coaches booths and a TV booth.

I prefer Jim as well. But, we may be showing our age. ?

Jim was a great one. He could help you visualize the game as well as anyone which was huge during the '93 season. Spoiled these days getting to see all of the games on TV. Used to get lucky to see them 2-3 times a year. Fyffe was really good at his craft.

I grew up on Jim and Charlie with Q on the sidelines...so at least from a nostalgia standpoint they are my gold standard. But I enjoy Rod and Stan and don’t expect too much out of homer college football radio broadcasters. Hell they’re better than most of espn’s 2nd and 3rd string duos on tv.

Anyone who doesn't prefer Jim Fyffe to Rod Bramblett never heard Fyffe commentate a game, or at least they didn't hear many and don't remember how excellent he was. Don't get me wrong, I like Rod, because I always like to hear Auburn guys over the national/regional coverage, but Fyffe is a legend for a reason.

I hope that when my days are done, I'll be able to hear his voice in heaven while watching the boys on the field every Saturday. Would hate to be begging the Almighty to smite Danielson a dozen times a game.
