L I G E R 120
There’s rumblings... Would potentially be a program-saving hire for Auburn and a career-saving here for Gus. Let’s see if Gus is smart enough to rid himself of dead weight Chip. (Not that I dislike Chip. He just doesn’t bring anything to the table with recruiting, scheme, etc.) Link to comment https://www.aufamily.com/topic/164269-hugh-freeze-as-oc/ Share on other sites
boomstick 1,315
Biggest two obstacles I see: would the SEC allow it and can he and Gus coexist with his offense and its lack of a strong run game? Don't think the SEC would allow Freeze to join Bama's staff last year (at least that's the rumor). And can Gus and Chip blend their offenses well enough to give Freeze's system more power run and Gus's system more simplistic-yet-complex passing schemes? I feel like Freeze might be one of the only options out there that Gus couldn't just run all over like he's done to Rhett and Gus. AUsince72 11,084
Do you really think Gus would let Freeze be the OC or would he just be another Chip? I'm truly not sure Gus is capable of letting go... Scary too. He'd have to watched like a hawk cuz the REC has Emmert on speed dial. TigerFanAU 586
Hiring Freeze would require Gus to give over the reigns of the offense. It's clear Gus is mandating the playbook, while Chip gets to make the calls. Freeze would want his own offense and to run it how he likes. I could never see Gus moving out of the way for Hugh to do his thing. I don't, which is why I think Gus's only options are to promote Kodi or Horton or take over himself. But like I said earlier, Freeze might be the only one who could hold Gus's feet to the fire about letting him run the offense because of Hugh's situation. It wouldn't really be about money for Hugh, and I don't think he'd hang around and let Gus do to him what he's done to Chip and Rhett. L I G E R 120
I see Freeze being one of the few guys Gus actually respects enough to take his input and make adjustments based on his recommendations. He’d also be a fantastic QB coach and recruiter to add to our offensive staff that we need so badly. bigbird 61,284
If it's gonna happen it would be after the season. That said, WDE and I've both heard and discussed this with eachother a couple months ago. HF and Gus are good friends and Gus respects HF's abilities. That is the biggest difference compared to the other OCs under Gus. The OCs so far under Gus don't really have a track record of success. I really think Gus thinks of them kind of like a teenager with a new license. In as much as he trust them with the car, but when he thinks they've become a little careless or reckless, he quickly takes away the keys. I think Gus needs a more experienced coach, like Steele, that has the acumen and experience to be able to stand up to Gus and not allow him to interfere.
