Auburn Transfer Portal Live Tracker

The new era of college football is here. Like it or not, the transfer portal is a huge part of college football in 2022, and for Auburn specifically, it should prove to be beneficial.

While players have already begun to announce their intent to enter the transfer portal over the past couple of weeks, unless a coaching change occurred at their school, Monday was the first opportunity for most players to actually enter the transfer portal. It's the beginning of a 45-day window for players to transfer, with the only other transfer window coming after spring practice from May 1-15.

For Auburn and new head coach Hugh Freeze, which currently only has 11 high school commits and is projected to lose a lot of upperclassmen, it could be a very, very large portal class. Auburn brought in nine transfers last year. That number could easily double in the 2023 cycle.

11:35 a.m. — As Nathan King first reported, Tar'Varish "Chick" Dawson is officially out of the portal. 

* 11:22 a.m. — WR Ze'Vian Capers has entered the transfer portal. The expectation is that he'll be back at Auburn, but if some big names call, he could look elsewhere. We'll continue to track him.

* 11:20 a.m. — Fairweather plans to visit Auburn soon. His first college game actually came against Freeze. He will visit Auburn. Wouldn't rule out a commitment during or shortly after that visit. FULL VIP STORY.

* 9:57 a.m. — A source confirms to Auburn Undercover that RaRa Thomas, the former Mississippi State wide receiver will visit Auburn this weekend. FULL VIP STORY.

* 9:09 a.m. — Former FIU tight end Rivaldo Fairweather has been offered. He's been added to the live tracker and, after talking with a source, is the tight end to keep an eye on, even above Morlock. 28 catches for 426 yards and three touchdowns last year.

* 9:02 a.m. — Cornerback AD Diamond has officially entered the transfer portal. Former in-state 3-star that never really saw the field.

As transfer window opens, Auburn expects good news at receiver

With transfer chaos set to commence across college football, Auburn is already gaining — or regaining, rather — production in its passing game.

As the transfer portal officially opens with its winter window Monday — after which players will have 45 days to enter and not lose any eligibility with a first-time transfer — a trio of talented pass-catchers plan to spurn their original transfer plans and suit up in the orange and blue again in 2023. 

New head coach Hugh Freeze expects former 4-star recruits Ze'Vian Capers and Tar'Varish Dawson to return to the program after meeting with them last week, while big-bodied tight end transplant Landen Kingalready pulled his name out of the portal last month and will rejoin the Tigers later this month.

Dawson elected to leave the team in late October and entered his name in the portal Nov. 1. He’s yet to withdraw his name as of Monday morning and could entertain options elsewhere, but the rising redshirt sophomore was reluctant in his plans to leave Auburn in the first place and now holds a strong first impression of his new head coach. 

“He had a great meeting with Coach Freeze; he really liked him,” Dawson’s father, Tar’Varish Dawson Sr., told Auburn Undercover. “So he’s planning to come back. He always wanted to be there (at Auburn); he didn’t want to leave. He’s ready to rock and roll.”

Arguably the most internally hyped player on Auburn's offense this past preseason — in terms of praise from coaches and teammates — Dawson began the year as Auburn's starting slot receiver, though that only lasted for a week before he was supplanted by redshirt junior Ja'Varrius Johnson. After Dawson did not appear in Auburn's Week 4 win over Missouri, he was removed from the depth chart altogether before returning as the co-backup at slot receiver with true freshman Jay Fair.

Dawson, a former 4-star prospect from south Florida, was not on the Tigers’ travel squad either. He had two catches for 30 yards in Auburn's first two games.

One of the highest-rated recruits on Auburn’s roster last season, regardless of position, the 6-foot-4 Capers’ name is also in the portal, though he, too, plans to return to the Tigers’ receiving corps, he told Auburn Undercover. 

A top-150 prospect in the 2020 class, Capers was the first Auburn player to leave the team after Bryan Harsin was fired on Halloween, doing so the following day.

The Alpharetta, Georgia, product had seven catches and a touchdown his true freshman season, though his usage didn’t increase as a sophomore, and he ended up taking only 18 snaps this entire past season, with only one reception. 

Originally choosing to sit out the remainder of the season in early October to maintain a redshirt, King entered the transfer portal three weeks later. Two weeks ago — while Auburn’s coaching search was still ongoing — he pulled his name out. 

King had appeared in only three of Auburn’s first five games in 2022, making him eligible for a redshirt. He had one catch for 24 yards against Penn State in Week 3.

A 6-foot-5 sophomore from Texas, King found a role as a freshman in 2021 at tight end, catching five passes, including a touchdown in overtime in the Iron Bowl. This past offseason, he transitioned full time to wide receiver.

Like Dawson, King didn’t want to transfer: "I love Auburn too much,” he told Auburn Undercover when he first elected to redshirt. 

Auburn’s only outgoing production in the receiving corps this offseason is that of fifth-year senior Shedrick Jackson, who had 16 receptions for 217 yards.

Cmon they aren’t the same. What Freeze did doesn’t concern Auburn. Cohen showed blatant disregard. If u want to create dissension in the locker room go right ahead.

So Cohen said some goofy stuff about Auburn as a recruit (many of the players from that point in time are gone btw), which is something many recruits do about one program or another. He reportedly did the little sensei pose, which plenty of Auburn players did in Alabama players faces. What else?

 

You’re thinking from a fan’s POV. Many players don’t care about that little small stuff, and they certainly won’t care about it if they talk to the guy and like him. Nothing that’s been mentioned to this point and from what I can recall following his process a couple years ago is anything thats going to just linger, as long as he isn’t an ass when he gets here

You’re thinking from a fan’s POV. Many players don’t care about that little small stuff, and they certainly won’t care about it if they talk to the guy and like him. Yeah I’m familiar with that, I was talking about the public actions that he did in relation to Auburn. That would be the supposed backdrop for how he’d be viewed 

I also don’t think a last minute flip would be anything a stable of players who almost all faced the same decision (flip flopping) care about

Auburn QB Zach Calzada will enter the NCAA Transfer Portal

AUBURN — Zach Calzada will enter his name into the NCAA Transfer Portal, sources tell Auburn Live.

Sources tell Auburn Live that Calzada was scheduled to meet with new coach Hugh Freeze on Monday morning, but Freeze directed him to player personnel instead. According to sources, Calzada decided to enter the transfer portal following the meeting.

Sources told Auburn Live after the Freeze hire that the former Under Armour All-American wanted to remain at Auburn and compete for the starting quarterback position in the spring.

The decision leaves redshirt freshman Robby Ashford and true freshman Holden Geriner as the two quarterbacks with any kind of experience on the roster.

The former Texas A&M transfer, and now Auburn transfer, decided to shut his season down in September after battling lingering shoulder issues following postseason surgery last winter. Calzada lost the quarterback battle in the fall to T.J. Finley.

The surgery calls for a four-month rehabilitation time, which shold allow Calzada to be prepared for spring practice at his next destination. Being fully healthy for spring practice, something Calzada wasn’t this past spring, was an important part of Calzada’s initial decision to have surgery. Calzada initially injured his left shoulder as the Aggies’ quarterback against Auburn last season on November 6.

Calzada’s initial decision at the end of September came two days after Auburn Live confirmed reports that T.J. Finley would miss this Saturday’s game against Missouri with an injured shoulder. Harsin and offensive coordinator Eric Kiesau were left with redshirt freshman Robby Ashford and true freshman Holden Geriner as primary starting quarterback options heading into the Missouri game.

With Auburn trailing Penn State by double digits in the second half, Harsin and Kiesau contemplated inserting Calzada into the game. Harsin admitted as much afterwards, saying they “talked about it,” but ultimately decided to keep Robby Ashford in the game.

The decision by Harsin and Kiesau to not play Calzada came days after he took some first-team repetitions during practice leading up to the Penn State game.

Calzada’s initial surgery following his last season at Texas A&M involved repairing his labrum. Labrum repair is surgery that treats a torn labrum. Labrum repair relieves symptoms and restores joint stability, strength, and range of motion. The upcoming second surgery is a fairly routine procedure that generally follows an initial labrum repair.

Following offseason shoulder surgery and transfer to Auburn, Calzada missed important parts of spring practice while recovering. He participated in throwing drills, but was held out of all 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 competition, and any other activities that involved contact.

Harsin said at SEC Media Days in July that Calzada has “been awesome.” Harsin added, “it was about what it takes to be successful at the position. The work ethic, the focus, attention to detail, that’s become his foundation. We appreciate it.”
