Tiger in Spain 0
Panel backs sex claim vs. porn shop By LARRY GRARD Staff Writer AUGUSTA -- The Maine Human Rights Commission has agreed that a former Skowhegan man was subjected to sexual harassment during visits to an adult book and video store. In its split Aug. 8 ruling, the Human Rights Commission sided with the claims of Raymond Clark, now living in Portland. Clark said he was subjected to unwelcome sexual advances and comments by a clerk at 1st Amendment Book and Video, while it was operating on Water Street in Skowhegan. It since has closed there and now operates on Maine Avenue in Farmingdale. The commission also ruled in favor of Will Stuart Sr., owner of the store. It said there are no reasonable grounds to believe that Stuart unlawfully barred Clark from the store in retaliation for his complaints. As result of the ruling for Clark, the commission will attempt to reach an out-of-court settlement between the parties. Should that fail, Clark can go to court armed with the commission's finding. In his filing, Clark said that clerk Carlton Larrabee harassed him. "I was a regular customer at FABV," Clark said. "I was subjected to constant sexual harassment and sexual advances by one of the gay male clerks at the store, Carlton Larrabee. I found his actions to be totally unwelcome and offensive." Clark said he complained to Larrabee, and threatened to go to his supervisor. Shortly thereafter, Clark said, he was banned from 1st Amendment Book and Video. In his response, Stuart noted that Clark was protesting in front of his store. Stuart also said that his son, the manager, told him Clark had been barred from the store because he was having boisterous arguments there, disturbing customers. Larrabee also informed Stuart that he could not longer go into the store because of Clark's behavior. "When Mr. Clark was protesting in front of the store and Will Jr. asked him why, the complainant pointed to the sign above the entrance to the store and said, 'I expect a big check,'" according to the commission document. Stuart also told the commission there had been no other complaints regarding sexual harassment at his shop. Clark's girl friend agreed with him that Larrabee made graphic sexual comments to Clark. She added that, she, too, was banned from the shop because she was dating Clark. Link
