I said here before, IMHO the OL/DL Play was the real reason we looked so bad.

The RBS looked bad because they had no holes. OL was rocked backward after every play. DL got ran on all night.

1. If the OL is not physical, you can't run the football, no matter how good the back(s)!

2. If you have not prepared for MISDIRECTION and SLANT Plays, the defensive speed of the LBs and DL will be used against you--as it was with us! Plus, you make adjustments in the "D" at halftime or before-- we didn't!

3. If you have an inexperienced QB in a BIG game, against an experienced team, you put in plays that develop fast such as screens, draws, and quick slants to save h im from a beating.... such as Cox got!

4. When you have a chance to tie the game up with a field goal on 4th down, and change the momentem and psyche, you DON"T go for it... as we did.

5. IF you can avoid it, you don't pair a 6-1 DB against a 6-5 WR and expect him to cover, expecially when the kid hasn't been coached to employ the "bump and run" technique to hold him up some at the line of "s".

Cope/Ross and Duckworth allowed Cox to get killed which DID determine Cox's bad decisions in the game...

PERIOD!!!

Cope's poor block on #96 got him an INT as well as THOSE TWO CHEAP SHOTS NOT CALLED BY THE ACC REFS!!

every time we had a no gain on a running play the mid-rgiht of the line broke like a weak dam...

COX's mistakes were a result of the O-line and RBs putrid blocking!

RONNIE BROWN WAS THE BEST BLOCKING TB IN THE COUNTRY! TRE CAN'T HANDLE DLs or LBs!!

The center was on ice skates. I like Tre and I think he's a great back, but he doesn't have the size to be blocking a 240lb DE running 12mph over and over again. Stewart missed a few blocks as well.

Chan Galey, like TT said on the show last night, did a good job of using our defensive speed against us.

Coaching. I really believe that the root cause of the OL & DL problems is coaching. The DL was undisiplined, often running themselves out of plays. The OL has the experience and the physical size to dominate a game, there was no excuse for their play. The buck stops @ the coaches however, IMO.

I've got to agree with Raven, I was dissapointed in the play of the OL. I knew we where hurting at center but had no idea about Duckworth. GT was very quick in the middle and we struggled to handle. On Defense, how many times have I seen, especially in 2003 our speed take us out of the play. We really miss Eddins and Ratliff.

I may be only one on this board to think this. i don't see anyone else saying it. I think we lost the game because our defense is too small up front. Our tackles are terribly small (not enormous either) bu the rest of the front seven will not be able to handle any team that has a big back running behind a good blocking fullback and an average OL. Last year we got by with small fires because we jumped out to big leads early in almost every game. (Plus our size wasn't quite as bad)

Our LBs got to their back in the backfield several times yesterday and just weren't big enough to take him down. If we would have stopped their runnning game early it would have changed the entire complexion of the game.

I think blocking--O-line & backfield--was the biggest problem. The defense settled down pretty well as the game progressed, and I think it will take care of itself as our young guys get a little seasoning under their belts.

Two questions/suggestions--some of you living room coaches with more football knowledge tell me if I'm making sense:

1) I wondered all along about the wisdom of starting junior Joe Cope (6-0, 276) at center ahead of senior Steven Ross (6-6, 292). Apparently the coaches think Cope has more physical skills, which is why he started, but we were inconsistant on the line and had a lot of motion/false start calls. Ross has much more experience from last year, and it seems like he'd be a steadying influence on the line because of that experience.

2) Shouldn't Big Marcus McNeil be playing right tackle to protect Cox on his blind side? BUT..is it too late to flip lineman at this point in the season? How much practice time do they need in a position to execute smoothly? It's certainly important that the entire line function as a well synchronized machine & I don't know if that rhythm can be developed in a week or two of practice once the season has begun.

Also, if I were Borges/Ensminger, I'd have all my running backs spend most of this week working on their blocking technique. We know they can carry the ball, but none of them seems to be the blocker Ronnie and/or Carnell were. If you're not big enough to hold a block, then chop block 'em and put 'em on the ground.

On the glass half-full side: I think all of our problems are due to lack of experience--the talent is there. So as I have believe all along, 2006 is our next championship year!

Ross has been hurt

OL and DL play-without a doubt-false starts killed probably 4-5 drives-too much for most QBs to overcome in those situations IMO

one, as a matter of fact our starting DTs are both over 300 lbs. Jackson listed at 305, Dickens at 303 #, backups Thompson 301# and Brown 264#. Our DTs are not small. Someone can argue our DEs are small, McGlover 6-3, 247, Gunn 6-4 238, Groves 6-4 245, and Browder 6-4 247! I don't think that is the biggest problem. These same guys played last year and did well. Ga Tech used our speed against us. Running those counter plays repeatedly that DL and LBs over ran, and did not adjust well to. I don't necessarliy think our LB size was the problem with bringing down the Tech RB, it was fundamentals of tackling. Our LBs were there many times in the back field to make the tackle and just didn't make it. Even both Antarrious and Travis, both sure tacklers last year, missed several tackles.

OL, IMO the change at center was of significant importance. Not only the size loss b/t Ross and Cope, but the leadership and experience. I think a lot of the problem in picking up the blitzes was a combination of inexperience of the center and QB. There were a few times when BC picked up the blitz and checked off to a great play. Other times that didn't happen. I think the OL missed and couldn't handle the blitz package Tech brought. Like quietfan said our RBs did not to a good job as a whole of picking up there blocks. Like Erik said the false starts by the OL on 4 or 5 drives, that had gotten into Tech territory BTW, killed us. Those from an experienced OL and TEs. I guess they haven't gotten used to BC checking off at the line. That is where all of them came is after BC made a check off at the line and then went back to the hard count for the snap.

Lots to work on for the TEAM!!!! I commend our WRs and special teams...they played ausome!!!!! If we can pull everything together this week everyone will see we are a good football team. We have lots of talent. Think about if BC has the time to make his throws and reads???? He threw for 342 yards in a bad offensive day!!! What is a good offensive day going to be like for him??

Everyone just wait. It will come together. I hate it for these guys to have dropped the opening game, I know they are disappointed. I know the coaches are working hard!! CTT was not at church yesterday morning with his family...which has not happened very often. Last year, every Sunday he was there. That tells me they are working at it first thing Sunday. Go Tigers!!!! and War Eagle!!

Tre, in an interview before the game, stressed that the backs were going to really have to protect Cox with their blocking assingments. The only way Tre can block a big ole end is to hit him low. Pretty soon the ends will just hurdle hin and keep on trucking. Can the backs do any better? We shall see.

Frankly, I prefer a bigger center. Cope can't handle the big, quick DL. They blew past him on the running plays. With the speed of other teams on the defensive side of the ball, we must have good blocking from our center and guards to be able to run up the middle. The odds of going wide and making yardage on a consistant basis is remotr these days.

I knew something was not right when:

The ball blew off the tee at the start of the game...We proceeded to kick the ball out of bounds... TT was wearing his Eye of the Tiger pin on his RIGHT collar when before he has always worn it on the left side. These three things hit me as being an omen....and an uncomfortable one at that.

Mentally we were never in the game....we seemed to be in a fog at times...both players and coaches. TT said that in the practices last week, the players did not seem to be mentally ready. He was right.

With all that said, I look for us to come back strong and ready to compete for the SEC championship.

Offensive tackle Marcus McNeill says he was surprised that some of the Georgia Tech defensive players took cheap shots with late hits on Brandon Cox and they were also grabbing the quarterback when he was down and “ripping on his facemask.” McNeil says, “That’s just not football.” He says that the Yellow Jackets weren’t at the level of Virginia Tech, which he says was a dirty team.

The OL and DL was the biggest disappointment because of my inflated expectations ... but that isnt what sunk us.

Coaching killed us Saturday night. The running game was on track by the 4th quarter and we had a green QB. Run the ball, coach! Don't put it all on the shoulders of a rookie QB.

I love CTT and CAB and hope they bring back some of the creativity of 2004.
