The defense has got to get better.

I didn't realize that P.J. Daniels ran for 111 yards on our defense. This was a defense that didn't allow a rushing touchdown until the end of the season last year. I wonder if Tuberville made the right decision in his D.C. selection. He probably should have hired a more seasoned coordinator.

Forgive us if we choose not to make a judgment on whether he's the right guy or not after one game.

In 2002, Gene Chizik's first season, Arkansas was the sixth game of the year.  Does anyone remember how much rushing yardage we gave up that game?

OUCH, just thinking back at that game is painfull.

Let alone watching it unfold before my eyes......

Yeah. I was there live and in person for that debacle. Arkansas rushed for 426 yards that day. Fred Talley accounted for 241 yds on 21 carries alone.

Point being: WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too early to be saying things like "he probably should have hired a more seasoned coordinator."

I agree it is way to early to cast judgment on the quality of the DC that was chosen. However, I too was suprised and a bit concerned with the run defense at times. It seemed that there were some instances where GT would rip off 6-8 yards on first down. I felt like after last season, run defense should be a real strength for the team.

Some have posted that we overran plays, etc. This may be true, but as Tub said himself the tackling was poor for much of the game. I too believe you can't draw many conclusions from one game, but I do hope the dominant rush defense shows up this weekend. ;)

About 80 of those 111 yds were in the 1st half for Daniels. The defense did make some adjustments -- obviously, not quick enough to win but they still adapted. Give 'em a chance.

Power I,

Just to put things in perspective...

Our defense allowed 4.17 yards per play against Ga. Tech. Looking back at all of Auburn's games since 1981, I threw out all the Division II schools and directional teams we faced, leaving me with 233 games. In terms of yards per play allowed, Coach Gibbs' debut ranked at #76. This isn't too shabby when you consider that 76th was better than 26 performances under Gene Chizik and Chizik was our DC for 39 games.

I think we should wait and see what we do in our next ten ball games before we judge the man on his first game. Let us not forget we only gained 380 yards and 31 pts against a very weak La. Monroe team during Al Borges' debut as our OC.

I guess you're right that it is a little early to start putting coaches on the chopping block, but our defense was supposed to be our backbone. It was the defense that was supposed to ease the pressure off of an inexperienced quarterback and give us a chance to win. Instead of making Brandon's life easier, they made it harder. He was in a hole before he even took a snap. I knew that our offense was going to struggle because of an inexperienced quarterback, but I atleast thought our defense would bail us out.

Well, against State Tuberville has no excuses. If anybody believes that State has better talent or a better team, I have some beach front property in Idaho for sale.
