From what I've seen of his "Special Teams" coaching, if he coaches the nickel position like he does the "Special Teams," then they won't be worth a "plug-nickel!"

Seriously Hugh? Special teams have been pretty much a disaster.

Oh well, it's your job on the line, not mine.

Most of the problems have been the result of field goal kicking. Thats about specific players rather than specific coaches.

Hugh Freeze continues to disappoint with his assistant coaching hires. When are we going to start acting like a big-time program? Special Teams was a disaster last year. Why was he not fired? Go out and get the best coaches in the country instead of promoting these off-the-field assistants.

The field goal kicking has been an obvious problem, but we have had the dropsies fielding punts and our kick returns have only occasionally been productive. I don’t know if it’s Burn’s coaching or the player’s inability to execute, but I’m a bit surprised by the promotion given the lack of excellence.

At some point during the season, Freeze said we have to stop returning kicks because we cannot do it without getting a penalty.

Announced at the beginning of the basketball game because they knew it would be wildly unpopular?

When someone woefully underperforms, you don’t typically give them a promotion and additional responsibilities.

You do if you’re clueless.

Field goal kicking was only part of it. We've had multiple penalties on kick returns, players fielding punts inside the ten yard line, and even players choosing to return deep kickoffs they had no business returning. If you're a legitimate threat to house one that can be overlooked at times, but I haven't seen a legitimate threat to take one back all the way on Auburn in a number of years now. Most of what I have alluded to here should be preventable with good coaching.

Your right about that. I forgot all about the incessant penalties.

I’m not supporting this move, but does moving him to an on the field position give him more time with the special teams units? I remember a debate awhile back about the difference of access between on field coaches and off field coaches, but it may have only been recruiting related.

And when we did have a good return...it was constantly brought back due to penalties. This guy should've been fired not given additional responsibilities when he can't perform his first job.

From the outside, looking in, it definitely has the feel of an unearned promotion. Linebacker play is critical to the execution of Durkin’s defense. This seems like a pretty important on field coaching spot and I’m not convinced he was the best available candidate for the job. Maybe we’ve devoted all of our money to NIL deals and this was the salary constrained option. Here’s hoping he proves all of us armchair General Managers wrong.

Sometimes players make the coaches, not the other way around. Let’s hope that is the case for this one.

If this is something Durkin wants, I can give it a chance, but if this is HF led, I don't agree with it. HF has lost a lot of my trust from a coaching aspect.

When Hugh took the job, he said he'd had hundreds of great coaches burning up his phone lines for a job to help him at Auburn.  Where are all these great coaches?
