Does it surprise you that Miami is #3?

To be honest, it doesnt surprise me at all. I think they have played much better teams than Alabama.

Give me your thoughts.

from a fan's perspective: I don't believe that Alabama is the #3 team in the nation

from an objective perspective: It's just a matter of opinion that Miami or Penn State is better and the fact is the Alabama has won all their games-who is to say that Bama's gameplan would have them score points when nessacary? No one can say that they know that Bama would lose to anybody.

If they win out they deserve to go to the Rose Bowl-I just don't think they win out-they will probably drop the next two IMO.

I must be honest.....I don't think it's really fair that Bama was jumped by Miami, but then again the rankings are subjective (and winning big seems to be more important than winning consistently, but of course when we beat UGA pretty soundly last year we weren't given much more respect). I believe that Bama has a great defense, and if it allows them to win by a field goal a win is still a win. Bama has won all of their games so far, so in the respect that they are one of the three unbeatens they shouldn't have been jumped, but the way Miami totally manhandled VA Tech caused people to take notice, but then again the rankings are subjective, so who's to say VA Tech was really the 3rd best team in the nation?? Hopefully it won't matter in the long run as AU is going to beat Bama I hope and go on to the SEC Championship game...but we must be UGA first....so we need to take care of our business.........War Eagle!!!

Rankings shouldnt be based on default. They should be based on who you think would win (1) on a neutral field (2) today. As such, I give you my top 10:

1. USC

2. Texas

3. LSU

4. Penn State

5. Notre Dame

6. Miami (note: Tyrone Moss is another HUGE loss)

7. Auburn

8. Alabama (note: JB Closer is a HUGE loss)

9. Va Tech

10. Georgia

This is how I would rank the top 10.

1 USC - although I think their D is not very good, and will get beat in the Rose Bowl by anyone with a really good D will beat them

2 Texas - very good defensive team, Young is good QB and would give USC fits if they can stay undefeated, which shouldn't be a prob with remaining schedule

3 Miami - great D and pretty good O, QB has really improved

4 Penn St - lone loss at Michigan, very good football team

5 Bama - just b/c they are 9-0, great D, no other reason

6 Va Tech - only loss was to the current #3

7 LSU - improving each week, great D, improving O with JR

8 UGA - only loss to ranked UF, solid on O and D

9 Oregon - have been playing good ball

10 Notre Dame - showed a lot in whipping UT, great O, mediocre D

To be honest, I see both sides of the issue.

1.) Miami is playing better than UAT and looked really impressive in Blacksburg Saturday. UAT should have beaten up on MSU. The Starkville canines stink on ice! UAT's offensive slump (SEC) since the loss of Prothro have them looking more beatable, especially with LSU and AU up next.

2.) UAT is undefeated in the SEC and are doing what it takes to win. If your "D" keeps the other team from scoring, who cares if you only manage a FG or two. Last I checked, 9-0 is better than 7-1 any day. And the conferences are comparable.

Just my 2 cents...

Does it surprise me? No

Do I think Miami would beat UA? Yes

But, UA should be ahead of Miami until Alabama losses...bottom line.

Rankings aren't based on who is better...if they were....teams with more losses would be ahead of teams with less...and IMO...rarely does that happen...if your name isn't Notre Dame.

Since today's rankings are a combination of who you are, what you have done, and whether you have a loss or not....UA should be ahead of Miami

On one side, the W is everything. Any coach or player will tell you that. Getting 8 Ws by 1 point is better than 7 Ws by 50 and 1 loss.

On the other side, ranking teams is about who is better. A 3 loss team could theoretically be the 4th best team in the nation, assuming they lost to #1, #2 and #3.

Its all opinion and assumption.

Southlink wrote, "Rankings aren't based on who is better..". That may be true, but isn't that what the rankings are supposed to be? The BCS has thrown another slant on rankings which causes raters to think, "What does it do to Team Magenta's bowl prognosis if I move them up a notch?"

The coaches have admitted they don't see enough games to do a good job of ranking the teams. Maybe we should let the players do it. I bet we would get a more objective ranking.

I probably would rank Miami ahead of bama because I think they would win the matchup, but I thought that in '92 also. Glad I was no longer wagering on college football then.

Surprise me? No

Do I think its fair? not really, I don't like UAT and outside of "D" they are not playing well. However they haven't lost yet, until they do they don't deserve to fall. No matter how much I think Miami, V Tech, Penn State or anyone else would beat them. Just like I don't think a 2 loss ND team should be at # freaking 7!

Maybe let the players do it? You mean ranking teams 1-25? I bet you'd get the same sort of biased subjective opinions we witness now. The trouble is, everyone has their own opinion on how the polls ought to operate: some people believe a team doesn't drop in the polls unless they lose, others believe the quality of a win matters more. Others think media darling schools should get top billing. The underlying problem is with rankings & polls. All they do is generate endless debate.

The only real question I have is this:

WHAT IN THE HELL IS FLORIDA DOING IN THE TOP 15??? They went to double OT with Vandy thanks only to the most bogus call I've ever seen and they moved up about four spots.

Polls are for morons.

I think the rankings should in fact be what team is better then another team.

Then again, I think a team with a 9-0 record in BCS Conference Team A should be given a higher ranking then a 8-1 record of BCS Conference Team B

So...how do I resolve it?

Frankly, I have no idea.
