A & M's  Franchione Is On The Hot Seat

Dennis Franchione, he of the 16-19 record and $2 mill plus per year contract at Texas A &M, is the next contestant in CFtalk"s "Whose gonna lose their job?" preseason analysis. Franchione, whose previous stints included resurrection of the programs at TCU and Alabama, is getting "fu--in' heat" (our source's words, not ours) by prominent A & M financial supporters incident to a "piss poor" (still not our words) 5-6 season in 2005.

"We are 1-11 against Texas and Oklahoma since 2000 ... how in the hell can we recruit against that?" said a person who is involved with the A & M program. "And why in the hell did they give this guy a bump up in pay and an extension thru 2011 after only his second year on the job?"

Unless the Aggies completely blow this year (say 4-7 or less), Coach Fran keeps the gig. In comments made by Aggie AD Bill Byrne in 2005, he stated that "it's a lot less expensive to keep a good coach than to hire another one to replace him. As a reminder, the last time we changed head football coaches at Texas A&M the total expense was approximately $4 million." :o

Good point-- keep the underachieving guy and go to the AssCrack Bowl with its payout of $750,000 instead of getting the more competent coach and possibly getting a big piece of cake from a BCS game.

One other note. In doing this piece we came across Franchione's website -- CoachFran.com. Memo to "Coach Fran": using your nickname on your  website and referring to yourself as "Coach Fran" is  ... how can we say this ... very gay. Please stop it. Now.

Heh heh ... loved this line:

... It looked as simple as jettisoning the crazies of Tuscaloosa for a more manageable situation. Fran had supreme confidence. He took TCU from 7-5 in 1998 to 10-1 in 2000. 'Bama went from 7-5 in 2001 to 10-3 in 2002.  ...

franchciioicioneoennenee has been the biggest beneficiary of other coaches' talent that I've ever seen. He had tomlinson and other players that Sullivan recruited at TCU, and the bammer players that stallings brought in. It finally caught up to him in CS, though.

He is gone after this year.

A&M is not going to move ahead of Texas nor OU and may break .500 against TT in the next 3-4 years with Fran
