Maynard Ferguson, the undisputed high-note king of the trumpet, who toured the world with his bands for 50 years and had a hit record with the theme from "Rocky," died Aug. 23 at Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura, Calif., from kidney and liver failure caused by an abdominal infection. He was 78.

Actually, he didn't write it, he rewrote it. The original version flopped, while his hit the Top 40.

'Tis a sad day for all trumpet players.

A slight correction. Bill Conti wrote the Rocky theme. However, Maynard Ferguson played the trumpet. Holy crap that guy could his a note. I saw him in concert twice and he was amazing. Those of you who love jazz know that the guy had some amazing chops. Rest in peace, Maynard.

'Tis indeed. He was a good one, and as far as this trumpet player is concerned, the king is dead.
