I think our ranking is legit. Lots of unanswered questions, particularly in special teams and the offensive line. However, if our OL gels and we have a competent kicking game...watch out.

WHY did Duke get a vote????

Spurrier always votes for Duke...a sign of appreciation i suppose

Oh! I thought maybe it was just respect for the way they brought the fight to the mighty Crimson Tide last year.

You beat me to it. I was gonna point that out....

Yes, Spurrier always votes them in the preseason to "let them know I haven't forgotten about them."

Bingo! It's his thanks for them giving him his first college head coaching job.

As it should be: 6 of 20 or 30% of the Top Twenty from the SEC !

Alternatively: Half the SEC ranked in the Top-20...match that, PAC-10 or anyone else!! :cheer:

Plus :ua::uk: & :usc: getting votes-- :usc: as many (90) as Notre Dame!

Under the radar? Not really

Posted by Phillip Marshall, The Huntsville Times August 03, 2007 9:10 AM

It's been said over and overe again in the run-up to the 2007 season. Auburn, people like to say, is "under the radar."

I'm not sure I see how that's true.

The Tigers were picked to finish second in the West behind LSU, almost everybody's favorite to win the overall Southeastern Conference championship. They are ranked No. 14 in the coaches' poll that was released Friday.

No, they're not in the top 10. They're not the favorite to win a championship. But they are clearly considered among the nation's top programs. No. 14 isn't a bad place to be at the start.

For any who haven't seen it, USC is, as expected, ranked No. 1. LSU and defending national champion Florida are No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. Florida's high ranking is a bit puzzling. They lost nine starters on defense, and it was defense that was the key to last season's run. Despite quarterback Tim Tebow's magnificent physical ability, he has never started a college game, never had to run an entire offense.

The Gators could pick up where they left off last season and contend for a championship again. But a lot of things would have to fall into place.

If Auburn gets on a roll, it's certain that no one can legitimately question the schedule. The Tigers have a road schedule no team can match. They play at No. 2 LSU, at No. 3 Florida, at No. 13 Georgia and at No. 20 Arkansas.

Here's the poll:

1. Southern California (45) 11-2 1,481 4

2. LSU (4) 11-2 1,372 3

3. Florida (9) 13-1 1,278 1

4. Texas 10-3 1,231 13

5. Michigan (2) 11-2 1,218 9

6. West Virginia 11-2 1,205 10

7. Wisconsin 12-1 1,114 5

8. Oklahoma 11-3 1,026 11

9. Virginia Tech 10-3 1,005 18

10. Ohio State 12-1 919 2

11. Louisville 12-1 836 7

12. California 10-3 763 14

13. Georgia 9-4 604 NR

14. Auburn 11-2 595 8

15. Tennessee 9-4 583 23

16. Rutgers 11-2 466 12

17. UCLA 7-6 454 NR

18. Penn State 9-4 440 25

19. Nebraska 9-5 388 NR

20. Arkansas 10-4 360 16

21. Florida State 7-6 301 NR

22. TCU 11-2 233 21

23. Boise State 13-0 222 6

24. Hawaii 11-3 214 24

25. Texas A&M 9-4 209 NR

Others receiving votes (with 2006) records:

Boston College (10-3) 150; Georgia Tech (9-5) 150; Miami (Fla.) (7-6) 91; Notre Dame (10-3) 90; South Carolina (8-5) 90; Wake Forest (11-3) 71; Missouri (8-5) 58; Oregon State (10-4) 52; Brigham Young (11-2) 47; Clemson (8-5) 30; Oregon (7-6) 30; South Florida (9-4) 26; Texas Tech (8-5) 20; Alabama (6-7) 16; Oklahoma State (7-6) 15; Southern Mississippi (9-5) 14; Iowa (6-7) 12; Kansas State (7-6) 8; Memphis (2-10) 5; Houston (10-4) 4; Arizona (6-6) 1; Duke (0-12) 1; Kentucky (8-5) 1; Washington State (6-6) 1.

If I counted right uat is 39. I know AU isn't getting as much respect as they should, but seems like our neighbors across the state are a little too excited. Heck FSU is 21.

They are just 8 spots ahead of Dook. Good thing they scheduled them LAST year.

Personally I hate how it seems every year the preseason polls come out we're ranked at the least 5 ranks lower than how we ended the last year. I think this team will be a lot better than people around here and around the nation thinks it will. We have a senior QB, possibly one of the best defenses Tuberville has had, and good talent on offense. Keep in mind a lot of our offense last year was hampered by Cox being injured and several of our skill players on offense will have their redshirts off of them this year (Tim Hawthorne, Mario Fannin).

I would rather listen to my grandmother complain about her bad leg as opposed to listening to preseason talk and discussions regarding preseason polls. Irrelevant. All of this talk is irrelevant. The season can't get here fast enough for most of you.

We are 14 in both preseason polls so far. That's alright. Shout out to the SEC naysayers, 6 in the top 20. No surprise to those in the know. It's a yearly thang. Here's a little one for StatTiger (could never pretend to keep up) :

SEC in da polls....

Top 20

2006 - 4 pre ... 4 at seasons end

2005 - 5 pre ... 5 at seasons end

2004 - 5 pre ... 4 at seasons end ( :uf: went 7-5, I shed a crocadile tear)

Try as I might, can't find a single stronger conference.

Am I delusional?

The opinion polls are so inconsistent they don't really prove much.

Larry Blakeney, Troy;

George O'Leary, Central Florida;

How do these 3 confessed/convicted cheaters/liars have a vote in anything that controls anything of any importance?!?!?!

Sadly, preseason polls are extremely relevant in college football. Until you rid the NCAA of the bowl system and come up with a consistent playoff, who starts at the top in the beginning has the best chance of finishing on top. Don't believe me? Try 2004. I agree that it's all silly and stupid. Nobody has much of a clue of who is going to have a successful season this year. It's all based on returning productivity from last season and who has recruited well over the past four years. Now, I won't say that it's impossible to ascertain who is supposed to be good. But, with football, you can never be too sure who's got the best team until all teams have played each other.

True, but it's possible that we could actually be better and lose more than two games. The road sked is brutal...however, we didn't lose a game on the road last year...2 at home...weird.
