Slaughter is cleared to join Tigers

Posted by Phillip Marshall, The Huntsville Times August 06, 2007 1:42 PM

Freshman wide receiver Chris Slaughter has been cleared by the NCAA and is expected to join the Auburn football team Tuesday.

Auburn athletic department officials got the word Monday that Slaughter, a heralded signee who played last season at Hargrave (Va). Military Academy, had met academic requirements.

Slaughter, 6-foot-3 and 180 pounds, signed with Auburn in 2006 out of Peach County High School in Fort Valley, Ga. He failed to qualify, enrolled at Hargrave and caught 43 passes for 930 yards and eight touchdowns last season. As a high school senior, he had 1,350 receiving yards and caught a state-record 23 touchdown passes.

NCAA rules require that Slaughter practice for two days in shorts and two days in shells before putting on full pads.

Guys we are young at the WR position but we are loaded. Slaughter gives us one of the best young receiving corps in the SEC. It will only get better with time. Expect to see the Tigers start taking some more chances down field now that Cox is healthy and he have some speed and size at the WR postion. WDE

This is GREAT news. This kid is a "Difference Maker". Expect to see a lot of him and Hawthorne THIS year.

Unfortunately I think Slaughter got cleared too late and will likely redshirt (IMO). He's already missed too much time, I doubt he'll be able to pick up the playbook, get his routes down, and build timing with the QBs before the season starts.

At least if he does redshirt, he has 5 to play 4. We'll be seeing him after he beefs up (171lbs from a reliable source) and gets the playbook down. He's going to be a good'un

He is going to be way behind.

If he can adjust, he can learn for the first few weeks of the season and still make a big impact. Tray didn't play until Florida, but he made a difference. Slaughter is supposed to be that kind of player.
