AU player no one is talking about?

Alright, this should be some decent conversation fodder...

Give me a guy who you guys think may shine this year who isn't on the radar right now.

I'm not talking about Ben Tate or Lester. Not Brandon Cox or Tommy Trott.

He doesn't have to be an offensive player either.

Jonathan Wilhite, Senior CB

Yes I know we all know the name but I havent seen much talk about him. I feel he will excel this season and make himself a decent draft pick. With another year with Muschamp under his belt I feel he has a standout year.

I for one think that Josh Thompson, #97, DT, will be clogging up the holes and wrecking the backfields. This man is a Beast. So, JT's gettin' my vote.

I've been hearing some good things about Aaron Savage as well. He's not really a "big" name you hear a lot about, but he's supposedly looked good in practice. Last year, our (mostly inexperienced) secondary play lacked consistency. Hopefully a year under their belts helps out guys like Savage and Brock.

I think he'll see some playing time, maybe not at RB, but somewhere. He will be utilized because of his tremendous athletic abilities.

I like him alot too.

Mario Fannin. One of the coaches (forget which one) hinted less than a month ago that he could be a starter by the end of the season. That's pretty heady praise considering his competition back there.

ERIC BROCK...made GREAT plays agains LSU last year...will win back the starting job in the secondary...and be a FORCE. Will INT John Jacob Jingleheimerschmidt Parker Posey Brian Carl Dennis Wilson Phillips FOUR times in a serious beat down of the Satan minions.... :)

:au::homer:

I thought Wilhite had a better year last year than did Irons. He was my pick too.

I know Fanin is talented, but he's got two guys ahead of him who are pretty darn good. Will he figure in special teams at all?

I found the quote, by CTT nonetheless. He's talking about this season in the interview:

Other highlights:

Redshirt freshman Mario Fannin, Tuberville said, "might be one of the better running backs we've had at Auburn - and we've got five in the NFL. He has a chance to be our starter.''

A few months ago, I'd have said Pat Trahan. At this point, I'm not even sure who'll be his replacement (strong LB), but, whoever he is, he'll be inexperienced, and you'll undoubtedly hear his name alot - we can only hope it follows "Great play by . . . " and not "Another missed tackle by . . . "

I'm also hoping for a breakthrough year from one of the O-lineman. In particular, I look (hope?) for Tyronne Green to come through big in his first year as a starter (and after moving from defense), a la Tim Duckworth in '05.

And how about a #2 WR . . . ? Anyone?

Defense:

DB Aaron Savage

DB Jarraud Powers

LB Chris Evans/Craig Stevens (I can never keep the two straight).

Offense:

RB Carl Stewart

TE Cole Bennett

OL Mike Berry

WR James Swinton

Fannin and Tate will be 2A and 2B. They'll see pretty equal amount of time.

Fannin is expected to return kicks this year and may also end up as the #1 punt returner as well.

Should be Tristan Davis and Fannin on kickoff return. I think we will see Lester, Tate, Fannin, and Davis all rotating in the RB slot, not to mention the occassional Carl Stewart.

it ain't sexy, but i think mike berry has a chance to be a star on the oline. not many folks are talking about him because he was the backup center and backup guard after spring, but he's already been moved out to right tackle to work with the ones. he's one for me to watch.

defensively, i think pat lee's the corner to watch. BUT he's also not running one so far this fall. so maybe not. i just thought he was the best corner on the field at the end of the year, david included. he's got all the measurements you could dream of, but if he's not the guy, pat sims is. i'd say marks but i think most folks know him. sims is working hard now. i think he turned a corner late last year. he killed nebraska, and i think he's gonna keep it up this year.

oh and one other guy, montez billings. people raved about him in spring... now all i read is about dunn or hawthorne or slaughter. i still think billings' speed/size combo is going to be huge for us this year. they say you need five wide receivers. if so, he's one of our locks. (best guess would be: smith, billings, dunn, hawthorne, and either zachery, slaughter, or swinton as our top guys)

I'm with Titan. Pat Sims will be a beast. If he steps up the way many think he will, look for Senderrick Marks to have a killer season. Marks and Thompson were basically stalemated a lot last season. They were the only players with size to plug the middle and honestly, I though we suffered there and got very little push. With Sims coming on late last year and the progress he's looked to have made in the off season, Marks can move outside and won't face any double teams.

The two publications I've seen so far have Marks at 292 and 295, up considerably from last year. This will be the one year I won't worry too much about the Arky's of the world just lining up and playing smashmouth. If things work out and...if we go with a 4-3...I can see us lining up:

Marks 295

Sims 314

Thompson 300

Groves 255

My darkhorse for a backup that breaks on the scene....Mike Blanc

marks was a beast last year. freshman tackle starting all 13 and finishing second on the team in tackles for loss. i think the move to end was a great one for the defense and potentially for his earning potential (marcus spears anyone?), but he didn't need help showing out. completely agree though, we should be much better set to defend the run with marks holding down strongside end... kinda like we were with the always underrated brett eddins.

I agree with Montez Billings... I saw him play in High school and he made some incredible catches that could rival some made at USC the past few years...

I think any of the LB's could be stellar this year... So I'm gonna have to put that in as my vote (yes I know that includes blackmon...)

DB Aaron Savage

RB Carl Stewart

errrrr hello???? what about Greg Smith?? i heard he is a beast. last year he came in over weight and supposedly he has dropped the beef and gotting stronger?

I can't tell if this is a joke or not..

(on the off-chance its not, Greg Smith is no longer on the team for academic reasons)
