Editor's Note: The Auburn University Football Letterman's Club asked Inside the Auburn Tigers to announce their fundraiser to support a former AU player.

The AU Football Letterman's Club asked us to announce their golf event set for Friday and invite anyone who is interested to participate:

We invite you to join the Auburn Football Letterman Club (AFLC) on Friday and help celebrate this Benchmark Anniversary. Anyone who loves the game of golf is invited to join the Football Lettermen for The Lee Carpenter Golf Tournament at the Auburn University Club and dinner at Coach Pat Dye’s Auburn Oaks. We’ve incorporated our Benchmark 25th Anniversary Celebration into a fundraiser to show our spirit of the “Auburn Family” by helping support Lee Carpenter’s family.

The AFLC family is asking you to join us as we show our support and help to a member who has accomplished much in spite of being stricken in 1986, at the age of 34 with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), which damages motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord and gradually paralyzes the entire body. Lee went on a ventilator in 1990, but he has been fortunate that his brain function remains good and he attained a second master’s degree, about five years ago, in spite of the disease.

Lee’s eyes are the only muscle he is still able to control. Through technologies and his ability to blink his eyes, he accomplished a second master’s degree in criminal justice online from Troy University. He taught a technical computer course a year or so before he decided to go back for his master’s. He had received one master’s degree from Jacksonville State University in the mid 70’s.

For the past three years, Lee has taught online classes. However, the family’s expenses still exceed the family income. In Lee’s words, “I can say without a doubt that without the help and support of the AFLC, Auburn fans, and loving, caring friends, we would not have been able to make it.”

Lee was an AU defensive back who lettered in ’72 and ’73. He played in the ’72 Iron Bowl “Punt Bama Punt” game.

Not only will we be helping a friend and teammate, we also hope to raise awareness of the tragedy of this disease that gradually paralyzes the entire body as well as raise awareness of such an incredible story--A LoveLee story. One of the tragedies of ALS is that it often strikes in the prime of life.

After the golf tournament, we will continue the 25th Anniversary Celebration with dinner at Coach Dye’s Auburn Oaks, where we will be honoring former football players who initiated the AFLC, those who have been instrumental throughout the years, and the 1957 Champions.

Team entry for the tournament is $1,000; individual entry $250; shotgun start will be at noon. Price includes golf, green fees, cart, prizes, lunch, and dinner at Coach Dye’s. You may bring a guest for dinner at Coach Dye’s for an additional $25.The Auburn Football Lettermen Club is a 501©(3) non-profit organization and a portion of your fee may be tax-deductible. All monies raised above food and entertainment costs will help support Lee Carpenter and family.
