Sweetwater Beer confiscated by state ABC Board

Recommended Posts

I thought it was odd when I started seeing Sweetwater IPA in my local store since I knew it was over the Alabama 6% limit. Apparently the ABC board just realized that also and started confiscating it from warehouses. If you see some in your local grocery store or beer store (inventory on shelves was allowed to stay until sold out) pick some up, it's a pretty good brew.

I am surprised at how many Alabamians don't even know about our laws regulating beer and how much they differ from the rest of the country. For more information click here.

Yep. Now wine is 12-14% alcohol. You can buy that by the truckload in this state. Yet, for some reason, beer can't be stronger than 6%. Go figure.

It reminds me of a joke they told me in New Zealand: Why is American beer like making love in a canoe? It's f***ing too close to water.

I loves me some Sweetwater 420.

Good Gods yes! I went to the brewery a few weeks ago on my buddy's birthday. Sampled a few of the goods. 420 is great, but not the best one they make. We ended up getting a half keg of it the next day though. Mmmm, beer good.

420 is great...but the IPA is by far the best. Sucks that we can't get it in Auburn.

I can head to the liquor store and buy 190 proof (95% alcohol) EverClear, but heaven forbid I buy a 7% alcohol beer.

Life is too short to drink wincrimsony beer.

So you're turning your nose up to Sweetwater now? What's next, Stella Atrios?

No...I was in agreeance. It was in reference to the stupid beer laws here in Bammy.

Ah, I see. I was just checking the level of your beer-snobbiness.

I haven't actually ever had Sweetwater or Stella Artois. But I love trying different ones.

Stella...great beer. I had never had a ShinerBock unitl I got to Texas. It is now my favorite. Another one of my favorites is New Castle Pal Ale....mmmm...beeer :homer:

Pilsner Urqel -- Mmmmmmmmmm.

The biggest problem in my marriage is that my wife just doesn't share my love of finely-crafted brews. So when I bring in something like Blue Moon or Shiner Bock she always says, 'Ewwwwww, I can't drink thaaat.'

When the Party Barn is finished out, I'm having my own damn refrigerator with all the beers that make life worth living. And the obscenely large television that I can watch football whenever I damned well please.

Titan, you have heard of Stella. About a year ago we were talking about beers and I showed you their website. You said you probably wouldn't like it based your research. And you're right you wouldn't.

Right now my favorite beer is Kirin. I love Japanese beer, and this is the best of them IMO.

Shinerbock would be my #2 and Stella #3.

They just started selling Stella in Alabama about a year ago. I'm glad I can get it now.

Kirin over Sapporo? Do you prefer steamed rice over fried rice, too?

I didn't say I hadn't heard of it, just that I'd never tried it or Sweetwater. I don't seem to remember thinking it was one I'd like though.

The Japenese do a lot of things right. Beer is not one of them.

One beer I wish they'd sell in Bammy is Fat Tire. Love that stuff.

Well, Japanese beer is crafted more like wine. It's brewed to go along with food, not to drink on its own.

Actually Japanese beer is crafted more like Budweiser. The grain bill is supplemented with rice (no brainer for Japanese beer) and the hops are very lightly applied. That is why Japanese beer (and Budweiser) goes so well with sushi, the flavor of the beer is light enough so that it doesn't overpower the flavor of the food. Nothing wrong with a light tasting beer, and it is actually harder to make consistently as any off flavors are sure to come through.

My favorite beers that are available in Alabama:

Mackeson XXX Stout

Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier

Young's Oatmeal Stout

Bridgeport IPA

Sweetwater 420

My favorites in Georgia

Chimay Grande Réserve (Blue)

Duvel

Five Season's Brewing GFYPA (Good For You Pale Ale)

And my all time favorite:

Stone Arrogant Bastard.

I feel bad for you Alabama bound folks. Ga's laws were loosened a few years ago and you can get some strong beers here. If you're ever in Atlanta, go to The Brickstore in Decatur. Best craft beer selection in the state, and probably the southeast. They have an entire bar upstairs dedicated to just Belgian beers. http://www.brickstorepub.com/

Sweetwater has a decent wheat beer now too - Summer Hummer.

The best wheat beer is Weheinstephaner though. So good.
