Classic Pinball Machines

Galens mention of his KISS pinball machine got me thinking about the older pinball machines I played growing up, mostly in the 70's, and 80's.

Anyone else love pinball?

Here are a couple of my favorites:

Playboy

Six Million Dollar Man

That is a great combination 88.

Both fulfilled different fantasies didn't they? <_<:poke:

I can remember playing pinball when I was a kid and as a teenager. Huuummm Even as an adult. But I can't think of any that stand out in my memory. I must have never played the Playboy game. <_<

LOL! true. They were also both located at the convenience store down the street.

If I ever build a big enough house, the next machine I'll get is Playboy. I can still hear the music that started when you put a quarter in:

Dinka-Dinka-Dinka-Dinka-dink-dink-dink.

From owning a machine I can now tell you that they were 100% set up to cheat you. There are magnets under the exit lanes that can be controlled. So when you saw that ball balance and then roll slowly toward the return side, you were right. You were getting screwed. And FWIW? I didn't even know there WAS a Sopranos machine until I saw it in a list I was looking through. Never seen it, never played it.

Yeah, the magnets were there. We got so good at playing that each time they would come and collect the money they would tweek it up a little more to make it harder. The six milluion dollar man would pull a ball from a long way off down the drain if it was moving slowly enough. Thats enough to piss a teenager off to say the least. We still owned it though.

Where does one go to get a pinball machine in the first place?

I found mine at a place that sold and rented the machines. Most places didn't buy them back in the day, they rented them from an arcade company that would rotate them out regularly -- or if the game was making lots of coin, sell it to the convenience store/game room/pool hall where it resided.

There are literally thousands of old pinball machines and video games gathering dust in warehouses now. Retired ones. Look up arcade suppliers in the yellow pages. The guy I called was more than happy to let me search through what he had because unless he can part them out, they're not worth much to him. He had Pac Man, Space Invaders, Galaga, all kinds of games in addition to about two dozen pinball machines. But that was 12 years ago. It would probably take some digging and patience to find a good machine now.

If you're looking for the quick hit you can find some on eBay. Here's a link to a KISS machine:

We used to have this game at the local pizza joint when I was a kid. You had a gun and shot pinballs at advancing echelons of aliens. It was like Space Invaders except lower tech. Anybody know the name of that one?

My addiction/mastery was Asteroids. It got to the point where I'd get so far ahead of it, I'd walk away with bonus ships all the way across the top. The owner finally got rid of it, I think because of me.

Used to be this game at the store down the street called Crystal Castles. I got hooked on that game very quickly and played it all the time. Eventually found secret "portals" that transfered me to extremely fast levels and racked up 100's of thousands of points. I had the top 5 scores on the machine and number 6 wasn't close. It was truly addicting for me.. I loved that one and Donkey Kong as well. Have a pc version of that too...
