What really is the worst thing about the first game

For me, it is the fact that the first game is often times so ugly. The players haven't had game conditions in over 8 months. I'm not saying I want preseason games, but I wish there was a way to get teams better prepared before the games actually count. I think it would be kind of interesting to see a college football style jamboree like in pop warner. Any other thoughts?

I will say I've often thought it would be pretty cool to bring down a team not on your schedule and no chance of playing them for a very controlled scrimmage. They do it in the pros all the time. Have Troy or UAB bus in and hold a scrimmage. The players would sure love to hit on someone else for a change and they'd get a taste of other team's speed and quickness.

In this particular year, you should be extremely concerned with the first game of your schedule. Your flaws will be exposed early before entering the SEC title race.

You've got that right. We do have South Florida the second week of the season.

HA HA HA HA HA

I'll tell you what...I love everything about that first week of football. It starts with that ESPN Thursday night game. I love it because I know, like millions of other college football fans...I'm not watching the game because of the crappy match up...I'm watching to get my heorin like fix on something I've been waiting 8 months for.

16 days, BG. Only 16 days!

UGA has had a lot of success starting off with bigger then usual games since Richt came.

I think the reason why is that the players KNOW that their 1st game is big and that if they lose it, everyone will get on them about starting the year off with a L. Thus, the team works harder and harder throughout the off-season.

Good thing for the team, imo....well, except if you lose

The wait.

But I also think that is one of the best things too. The anticipation is ridiculous. Especially on campus. Sorry to bring this game up again, but the 2003 opener against that cali team, the anticipation was tremendous. Everyone was so pumped. I think the wait can make the game better in some ways. You go for so long not having football and get used to it a little. It helps for me that I'm a huge Braves fan, but then when you get within a month or two of the season opener, I get a little crazy.

Amen to that, BG...that rush is so fantastic...nothing like it. :)

Since CFB is an opinion driven sport, there are no such thing as 'meaningless games' even if you specifically label them as such. A preseason loss in the NFL is forgotten and nobody cares about it. A preseason loss in CFB might cost you the MNC because the voters remember.

The WAIT is definately the worst thing. Then, once the first game starts - it's the butterfly/sick feeling I have in my stomach until AU pulls at least TWO touchdowns ahead of the other team. No amount of bourbon can alleviate that feeling. Once we get those touchdowns, I can relax - a little. Until the NEXT week.

I have to agree with you too BG.......I dont give a sh*t if I'm watching east central arkansas state play Louisiana monroe state technical college of the arts, or if I'm watching Michigan playing Miami. That first game cant be that much different than a crack heads first hit after spending 8 months in jail. I CANT FREAKING WAIT!

WAR EAGLE!!!!!!!!!!! :au::au::au::au::au::au:

Yeah I'm serious. I don't care who's playing that first Thursday night game. How many of you can't get any work done that day? How many of you already have your fridge stocked with a few beers...and a time set for a few friends to come over? That's one thing I love about these THursday night games. You get a liiiiitle taste. And that's all I need to get me to Saturday.

God you guys almost sound like you love football as much as I do! ;)

Here's one time where I can agree with the Bama Faithful... Well put sir. As much as I love college football, I was even pleased to see the preseason NFL on TV "JUST" because I knew... "It's Finally Here!"

Holy wincrimson I can't wait!

:cheer: WAR DAMN EAGLE!!! :cheer:

And this one should be a massacre. MSU is going to get killed. Hopefully it won't get LSU rolling too much, but I still can't wait to watch.

Wow...I didn't realize we had an SEC matchup right off the bat!! There are several games on Thursday night as well as a couple on Friday night!! I think the worst thing for the fans and players is the wait and anticipation. For the younger players I would imagine the "true" game speed. I know they will have done full speed drills with teammates, but there is still nothing like an actual game, and if they are freshman playing for the first time it has gotta be a huge thing..the older players are probably just in anticipation. They can't wait to hit someone from KSU in AU's case....showing them about the SEC. Come on August 30th!!!!!!!!!

Wait until you have a few kids.

I can't think about college football right now because we're prepping for Friday's big High School Musical II debut. The food is in the fridge, the drinks (Capri Suns) are chilling and the elementary set is getting ready for the big movie.

Unfortunately my TV is down for repair. Sony. Very unhappy with Sony at the moment. Unless it's back by Friday (and that prospect is looking grim) the party is going to have to move.
