It is pretty obvious that show is staged sometimes, but I think the main intent of the show is to detail different survival techniques. There was one episode where he floated down some rapids, and it was extremely obvious that he had a life jacket on under his shirt. I still like the show, I think a lot of that stuff is interesting. I like Les Stroud's "Survivorman" a little better though. He's more realistic because he doesn't have a camera crew there to bail him out if he gets in trouble. Therefore, he doesn't take the (seemingly) insane risks Bear does.

I still love the show, it's good entertainment and educational. Just funny to see behind the scenes, whats really going on.

Did you see the one where he "needed" to get across a gorge? He pulled out a rope, there was a film cut, and in the next shot the rope is securely fastened to the far side of the gorge!
