Blazing Firefox

I just tried this and we'll see if there is any difference. The first two settings that recommend that you change were already set that way in my browswer, all I had to do was add the last integer. BUT, for those of you that may not know about this one: Check it out...

Faster Fox

Already had all of that but had my network.http.pipelining.maxrequests set to 50.

Thanks for letting the rest of us know. Means a lot now.

Well piss. I thought this was going to be a thread about burning that sack of crap to the ground.

Did we start talking about BP and I not see the bridge in conversation?

Hey, smartass I was telling you you could pump it up to 50 instead of just 30.

Is this worth bothering with or not?

Not for you. You just stay blazin with the 2400 bps modem. Don't you go changing.

Just saying it would have been nice to have that information before someone like myself that sucks at the e-bays stumbled across it. BTW has anyone actually gotten a server to meltdown like they say on the site?

Another great day with Firefox.

Working on a pretty important project most of the day. Firefox annointed itself my "preferred" browser back when I installed it and I just haven't gotten around to changing it. That's my stupidity. I should have nuked the program. So I've got the documents checked out, working on about six or seven things at once.

At some point I need to look at something online and make the mistake of clicking the link in the document rather than opening IE and cutting and pasting. Well here comes great Firefox. First it has to restart because its loaded some "great" new updates.

I look at the info in the link and minimize Firefox in case I have to go back to review it again. A few minutes later, I notice that Firefox is no longer in my taskbar. Hmmmm.

My computer gradually begins to drag. Takes forever to transition from one application to another. Ctrl-Alt-Del. What godforsaken process is slowing my machine down? Is it a virus? Of course it is. A virus by the name of Firefox. So I use task manager and try to switch to it so I can close it. No go. Try to stop the program by ending the task. No go. Machine is now down to turtle with a broken leg slow. So screw it. I'll stop the process.

i stop the process. Firefox dies, thank goodness. But what's THIS? Now I've got unhandled exception errors on the other things I was working with. Bam, bam, bam, bam, bam. I lose at least four open windows. And roughly six hours of work that didn't save because I had the files checked out.

And don't give me any @#*%$ about what's happening to my machine not being related to Firefox. I don't have any problems at all unless that idiot program is open or sneaking around in the background.

Thanks Firefox. May you rot in hell.

Yet amazingly, I'm forced to work on a Windows box for 8 hours every day and run Firefox the entire time without quitting and never have a problem. Hmm. Must be my aura of awesomeness.

Now, apparently my aura doesn't have the power to make Microsoft Office 2007 run well, but I only claim some supernatural abilities, not omnipotence.

And yet your snarky response was unable to magically restore the first character in the work Firefox caused to be destroyed, nor did it deduct a single second from the time it took to recreate it.

Never fear, though, Firefox was removed from my machine this morning. It will be removed from every other machine over which I have authority. And I won't have this problem again.

Yeah, because no one has ever lost unsaved work on a Windows machine for any reason other than Firefox.

You're the one that waded into a thread for Firefox users that had nothing to do with trashing your beloved Wintendo and IE combo to take a dump. Don't get upset because someone scoops it up with a shovel and flings it back at you.

Right. And there's no conceivable way in the I-hate-MS universe you inhabit that Firefox IS the cause.

I smell dead horses.

You don't want to start with the shovels....

CCTAU, to answer you question, it is worth it. I have noticed some difference in how fast pages load up with my 5 Meg service.

As far Firefox causing a computer to crash, that seems a little unlikely doesn't it? I am not a fan of IE, but I have never had it crash my computer. Is a browser even capable of doing that?

IE was famous for doing just that for years. After an avalanche of complaints and bad press, MS finally figured out that integrating IE with Windows that tightly wasn't the best practice after all, despite their protestations to the contrary in court when defending against monopoly charges. Not only was it a massive security hole practically hanging out an open invitation to hackers, when it crashed it would cause the whole system to crash or give the dreaded Blue Screen Of Death.

IE7 is less connected to the rest of the Windows shell than any previous version of IE has been...so an IE crash is no longer almost certain to take down the whole thing and force a reboot.

Oh, okay. I had my issues with IE in the past, such as it freezing up the computer or being just plain slow, but I had never heard of it crashing a computer. I do remember all the hoopla about it being so integrated with Windows that they were taken to court for being a "browser monopoly".

Before Firefox came along, I had been using Netscape since the late 90s, so it has been along time since IE has been my browser of choice. I will admit, in the times I have had no choice but to use IE7, mostly for school, I have noticed a remarkable improvement over IE versions. Yet, it still seems to work a little slower then Firefox.

I used to use Thunderbird for my home e-mail, but I have reverted back to Outlook, though Blonde Wasabi is still using Thunderbird on her machine. The reason I changed is basically just for the use of the planner in Outlook. I can put all my due dates and test dates for school in the calendar and task manager. Unfortunately Mozilla Thunderbird only offers "Remainder Fox" and it is not near as good as the setup in Outlook. The downside has been that it seems like more junk mail gets through with Outlook then with Thunderbird.

If you really like the calendar function and still want to use Thunderbird, you should check out Mozilla Sunbird:

http://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/sunbird/

I don't know if it will be a feature-rich as Outlook yet or not. I used to use iCal on my Mac so I had no need for it, but it looks interesting.

You really don't want to start back up with this.

I'm not a @!#$*@#& idiot. I know what happened to this machine and I know what's happened to it (and others) before. I find your insinuation just a little insulting.

Keep your pants on GG. It was an honest question, which the last line you quoted is indicative of. I even pointed out that it was a common complaint of IE before the latest version. Yes, browsers (and other programs) are capable of crashing the whole system. He admitted ignorance of this after I posted:

Oh, okay. I had my issues with IE in the past, such as it freezing up the computer or being just plain slow, but I had never heard of it crashing a computer.

There's a difference between an offense given and an offense taken. You are clearly operating in the latter category at the moment. Breathe.
