BG and other Bama fans know that what I am about to say is no way me "hating Bama" or being bias against them because frankly, I have no problem whatsoever with their program on the whole or anyone that works there.

With that said, this cover and the Croyle cover really, really, really make me wonder what the hell is going on over at SI....I didn't see any reason whatsoever to put Croyle on the front when they beat UF nor do I see in any way, shape, or form a reason to put Saban on this cover....Is this Saban story really front cover news worthy? Was Bama's record after UF really front news worthy?

I look at both stories and see that maybe they are a side-story on a web-site....but on the cover of Sports Illustrated?

Maybe Bama fans have been told or something...who works at SI to put them on the cover? There HAS to be someone....there is NO WAY that these stories can honestly be thought of this highly beyond someone who is either a Bama fan, graduate, etc....

What would be interesting to research (which I don't have the desire to do) is how many of the other "alleged" second comings of the bahr were also put on the cover. AND, when he's gone in two or three years, will they put the next "alleged second coming" on the cover.

The author of this article is on the faculty at Alabama.

Are you for real on this?

this, to me, is much more worthy of the cover story than the win over florida. that was a single win (which wasn't even a huge win over a great team... there were at least 3 better teams in the sec that year than florida) that in no way signaled a return to prominence. the only thing that could've warranted that cover declaration/article would've been winning the sec title.

this is different. saban was the single biggest story in college football's off season, and his salary (along with charlie weis' i would add) is a real indicator of change in college athletics, football in particular. so following one of the bigger off the field stories of the year with a cover story about what he's now doing on the job is reasonable to me. it's a weekly magazine... they've gotta find something to talk about.

Maybe, just maybe somebody at SI HATES Bama. Ever think of that? What happened after the Florida cover? Bim-sala-boom. Season down the toilet. Ever heard of the cover jinx?

I think it's hilarious -- utterly hilarious -- that they're calling Bama "back" for the eleventy third time and this time they haven't even won a single game.

They do this stuff because the inbreds will buy anything Alabama right now. They are looking for the biggest bang for their buck. I would bet that a good portion of the Bama nation will buy multiple copies of this just in case they have a miracle season and this becomes a collectors item.

It's unbelievable how the national media loves Saban. I don't necessarily believe it has anything to do with Bama this time. Saban sells magazines. LSU hates him. Miami hates him. Michigan State hates him. Auburn hates him. Hate sells. That's all this is about. Unfortunately, UAT gets some free promotion.

Did you just make a post talking about it being ridiculous that Bama gets free media exposure and then freely (and without reason) promote your website or a website you like or a website you're affiliated with? I'm assuming that's why it's sitting there for me to click - cause you have something to do with it.

Is the article on SI.com the same as in the magazine? It's freaking 8 pages long! That's a lot for an internet article. I love how it starts that they hired Saban to beat Auburn.

I did not read the article or will I read it,but if Ricky Bragg is the author I can tell you it is probably damn good.If you haven't read any of his books(other than the Jessica Lynch story which I have not read) you should. He is a fantastic writer and Piedmont Alabama should be proud. If he is teaching at UA then they have one upped us on one.

What other CFB story is more worthy? This was the buzz all off season and I can't really think of anything else they'd put.

i agree, but i still wish they wouldn't have done that.....

You can bet the house on this.

The day they released that "Special Edition" issue, the bammers at my work bought like 25 copies each. Winn Dixie couldn't keep them in those overstock bins. The infamous "Bama's Back" issue was my last semester at Auburn so I didn't have to be subjected to the bamerham idiocy at the time, but I'd also bet the house they overreacted similarly.

A cursory search of SI covers regarding second comings seems to be limited only to the one with Brodie and the one with $aban on it.

Type the word Alabama into the search bar and see for yourself

It appears that they seem to be on the cover more when they get beat. Anyone want to chime in on this?

SI Cover Jinx by SI

This is one of the most enduring things in sports. The SI cover jinx is awesomely exact in its end.

A week after upsetting top-ranked Florida, LSU feels the Jinx in a 36-21 loss to Ole Miss.

CTT was the coach that did that one... ;)

Penn State is unbeaten and ranked No. 3 until Todd Blackledge makes the cover. A week later Alabama picks off four of his passes and spoils the Lions' season with a 42-21 victory.
Alabama is 11-0 going into its Sugar Bowl date with Notre Dame. But after coach Bear Bryant graces the cover, the Tide ebbs, losing 24-23 to the Irish.
They may have COME ABOARD, but the Bucs and Steve Spurrier walk the plank in their inaugural NFL season, getting shut out in back-to-back games and winding up 0-14.
Earl Campbell and the 11-0 Texas Longhorns lose their next game, the Cotton Bowl, to Notre Dame 38-10.
Joe Namath's movie star looks and swagger couldn't save him from the Jinx, as his 4-1 Jets go 0-4 after making the cover.
Paul Hornung and Notre Dame lose 40-0 to Oklahoma the Saturday after gracing the cover, then fall to Navy and Pitt as well. The Irish finish the season 2-8.

This is only a very short list. The "Bama is Back" isnt even on the sites list and we all know how that one ended. We were done in several times back in the 80's that didnt make it either.

What are they ranked...39th??? I mean, I understand that preseason polls don't mean much, but they're not under the radar...they BELOW, under the radar.... If he does a Terry Bowden his first year, put him on the cover next year...but this is a little ridiculous...bordering on Idol Worship....

Someone could get one for free if they wanted to dig through my garbage. That's exactly where my copy is going as soon as it shows up in the mail. :puke:
