The 3-4 defense

I've heard around town that they will be using a 3-4 and a 4-3 in equal amounts the rest of the season. I'm with Bandit though, I don't really like a 3-4. I like having 4 big boys up front.

Correct me if I am wrong on this but as I understand it we are not running an outright 3-4. It is more of a hybrid that will sometimes be 3-4 or a 4-3 depending on the blitz package.

I think the difference in the 3-4 and the 4-3 is whether Groves is standing up or has his hand down.

I think we will see more of this since USF likes to call plays at the line of scrimmage. When they audible based on the defense, we will as well. Much like USF didn't reveal much on offense, I don't think we revealed much of the new defense. But I think most of the time we will run our tried and true 4-3. Its our bread and butter and we are thin at linebacker.

If QG is going to drop into coverage, I would rather him do it out of his 3-point stance. That will disguise it a lot better and maybe the linebacker blitzing from the other side could sneak in. We did that once against KSU with either Marks or Coleman (cant remember) dropping back and the QB threw it right to him. Of course you cant expect the big uglies from the trenches to catch a bullet (our DBs didnt do much better at catching things that hit their hands), but at least he got a pass breakup for his defensive production points.

I think we have the DL guys to do it right. Sims, Marks, and Thompson. But i think you also need bigger inside linebackers to help out with the inside running. We have big hitters, just not heavy hitters at linebacker.

I'm not sure what everyone's fascination with Thompson is. He's good at clogging up the middle. But he has trouble getting off blocks because he's slow. If you don't run right at him, he's not going to go make the tackle. I much prefer some of the swifter DT's to him. Even if he did shrug a block, I think the o-lineman could run and get in front of him again.

Thompson does what an interior DL should do. Clog the hole, occupy the OL, and let the ends and/or LB's make swift adjustments to the ball to make plays.

Not always. Sometimes a DT is called on to stunt. And Thompson always loses contain on his side when he does. A DT still has to get off a block. When was the last time JT had a sack? Remember guys like McNeil, TJ Jackson, those guys could get off a block. If you occupy an OL and still make a tackle, thats even better.

When was the last time Sam Adams or Ted Johnson had a sack? How much did they get paid in the NFL? Some of the guys who are the biggest assets on the team are the guys who are built like a cement block and can't be moved.

How many times are these guys called on to stunt? I just think he's not a great fit for our system. It depends on athleticism. For Arky, stick him in there, because we always seem weak in the middle in that game.

I love your sig and avatar by the way.

I'm more of a 4-3 type guy.....The reason why we rarely ran the 3-4 or even the 4-3 that much was because KSU was passing on nearly Every Down, we ran the Nickel package Most of the game....which was pretty good for the most part because it let our DBs get in some PT, even though they were lined up 30 yards off the WRs on both sides. But, we'll see the 4-3/3-4 Hybrid (Tiger Package) more this week and next....then we'll go back to the Nickel for the UNM St. game, because of their style with Coach Hal Mumme calling the plays.

Isn't that MORE reason to run a 3-4? There isnt nearly as much stunting in a 3-4 vs a 4-3. In a 3-4 all you want the D-line to do is clog holes and take up blockers to free up the 4 linebackers to make the play.
