Redskins' Taylor shot

Sad news, he's in critical condition. They think it was during a break in at his home.

"He was responsive to the doctor's request to squeeze his hand and show facial expression, and so the doctors were very happy about that," Redskins vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato said. "They told us to hope for a miracle, and I think the positive news we got was extremely good news."

Taylor lost a "significant" amount of blood because the bullet damaged his femoral artery, and doctors were worried about blood flow to the brain, according to family friend Richard Sharpstein, his former lawyer.

"The doctors are being very guarded about their prognosis," said Sharpstein, who, like Cerrato, was at the hospital with the player's family and friends. "They're being a little bit skeptical about either whether he might make it or whether it might cause some permanent brain injury."

Bad news to the secondary as well. They went from being one of the best to one of the worst in just a few weeks.

Very sad. Taylor was a heck of a player. He was a hard hitter and a lot of fun to watch. And from all accounts, he was getting his act together after the birth of his child.

Prayers to his family and friends.

Where was he shot? I thought I heard yesterday on ESPN that he was shot in the leg? This can't be possible right? I mean if he died from it? Anyone got any details?

Hit the femural artery. One usually does not last long after that.

Wow... That is just scarey. I'm not much of an anatomy guy so it comes as a surprise to me that someone could be shot in the leg and die. That is shocking and scarey. Very sad to be shot in the first place but even sadder the unfortunate placement of where the bullet hit I guess. As scared as I'm sure he was I doubt he expected to die later from this. The whole thing is just tragic.

exsanguination from the femoral artery can happen in a matter of seconds. the fact that they thought he would survive is amazing.

One of the things I learned in the Scouts a long time ago was to never try to whittle on anything close to your upper thigh. The femoral artery runs down the inside of the thigh and is just as devastating as cutting the jugular.

The femoral artery can be worse than the jugular. The key word here is Artery. High pressure blood flows thru the aorta into the ascending and descending branches. Its then a straight shot down to the femoral artery and the heart is basically pumping blood straight out of the body under high pressure. Blood flow to the brain is quickly compromised and death follows quickly. There was a very good episode of M*A*S*H about this.

The jugular is a vein, or low pressure return to the heart. Because it is large vein you can have a lot of bleeding but compared to a femoral artery bleed it is much easier to control with simple external pressure.

BTW - its pronounced FEM-ah-rel, not fee-MORE-al.
