Tuberville agrees in principle to extension

Auburn University and Tommy Tuberville agreed in principle Tuesday to extending his contract to seven years, said a source familiar with negotiations between the school and the football coach.

Tuberville met with Athletics Director Jay Jacobs for much of Tuesday to discuss a variety of football-related issues. Tuberville and Jacobs are scheduled to meet again Wednesday.

Tuberville is currently in the third year of a seven-year contract he signed before the 2005 season. Jacobs will make recommendations about Tuberville's contract, and other football matters, to university President Jay Gogue, who has final approval on all of the negotiations. The agreement in principle is not binding on either side.

The Birmingham News and other media have reported Arkansas might consider Tuberville to be its next head coach.

More details on this story will be in Wednesday's Birmingham News.

It's pretty much a done deal now.....it will take a few weeks to get all the ink dry on the contract, but Tubs is here for several more years.

I love how the media had to add the tag line in there:

"The Birmingham News and other media have reported Arkansas might consider Tuberville to be its next head coach."

Again IT WILL TAKE at least 10 million to get CTT just for the first year. I am not sure the market will bear that right now for anyone.

?????????????????????????????????

I think he means $6 million buyout, at least $3.5million a year to get him.

Well, we may have spoken too soon:

New uncertainty in Auburn, Tuberville saga

Posted by Phillip Marshall, The Huntsville Times November 27, 2007 10:37 PM

In the ever-changing saga of Auburn football and athletic director's Jay Jacobs' discussions with coach Tommy Tuberville, there is new uncertainty.

What was described earlier Tuesday as an agreement in principle on a new contract was apparently an agreement on the length of a new contract. Other contractual issues apparently remain to be resolved.

If other issues are settled, the proposed new contract would run through the 2014 season. Tuberville's current contract, which will pay him approximately $2.8 million next season, runs through the 2011 season.

Meanwhile, Arkansas is looking at Tuberville with growing interest in its search for a coach to replace Houston Nutt, who resigned Monday night and was named head coach at Ole Miss on Tuesday morning.

A source close to the Arkansas search said that a move is under way to raise the money to lure Tuberville, a native of Camden, Ark., away from Auburn, where he is at the end of his ninth season.

Tuberville and Jacobs met for most of the day Tuesday and are scheduled to meet again Wednesday. It is uncertain if there will be an announcement after Wednesday's meetings

Not a snag really, just not the done deal it was reported to be earlier.

On a side note, PM is tossing out this Arky thing left and right tonight. I think he's toting CTT's water to give him a little leverage in negotiations.

Will someone please help me feel better about this whole thing.

I just can't believe Tommy would leave. I know everything is speculation etc. etc.

Where is the voice of reason?

If Tubby's dumb enough to go to Arkansas, he deserves them. I'm getting sick of this crap.

i doubt CTT goes ANYWHERE, BUT if Arky can get him....holy mess. i know Arkansas isn't a recruiting hotbed but CTT has always landed quality guys around the country, so it doesn't really matter. if they landed CTT look for the same type of excitement from the hogs that we had when we got CNS.

Everything, and I mean everything, I was told a few weeks ago said that he would never take the :arky: job. May just be using the offer to get what he really wants for assts and scheduling and upgrades too.

Arkansas

Tommy T - I could eat crow here, but I can't find one Auburn source that thinks Tubb is going anywhere. I think mastermind Jimmy Sexton ;) used this as leverage in Tubb's negotiations with Jay Jacobs. In fact I was told tonight that Tubb got another year, better salaries for assistants and more seats at the stadium. The only people that i talk to that think there is a chance are Arkansas guys.

I don't think he is going anywhere, but if one team could lure him away at this stage in his career, I would think maybe it would be his home state. I think Arky would have a heckuva better chance then Texas A&M ever did. Yet, like I said, I don't think he is going anywhere and his is probably going to get just about everything asks for from AU. How in the world could they let the guy that just beat UAT six years in a row go? If they did, they would be known as the biggest administrative screw-ups in the history of Auburn athletics.

That's what I figure, but I just wish both sides would play it straight up and be done with it already.

Besides, unless Walton money is involved, Arky ain't throwing $6M :au: 's way.

Just remember that negotiations and contracts MAY take months. CTT said during on of his pressers that it usually is a long process when he negotiates contracts. There are lots of things to go over and lots of people have to approve changes. These things don't happen overnight. Be patient.

Sorry, but I don't believe that after almost 10 years vested, and his most talented team gelling on the field, that he'd even leave for "a little more" anywhere else. It would have to be a major number that nobody could refuse (ie; $atan). I don't think the Auburn Administration would be looking at fighting off just "a little more" in light of where we are.

I look for this to be finished in the next day or so. The main topic we'll be talking about, in my opinion, will be our bowl destination by early next week.

Some of you guys need to chill. The Arkansas thing is nothing but leverage. Titan hit the nail with his comments about PM.

With all that said, part of me is as frustrated as every one else but I guess it's just the game we play in this day and age with negotiating contracts. The good old days of a hand shake and your word are long gone.

Hearing all of the talk every year is frustrating, but it is largely Auburn's own fault. If not for the "Jet-Gate" thing, I don't think Tub's name would come up nearly so much. And if I were him, I would still harbor some resentment about that. I don't know if that resentment would be directed solely at the few people involved, or if there would be some residual resentment toward the university in general.

I think it is not really fair to criticize Tub for squeezing the school a little after what went down. I think Tub likes Auburn and wants to stay here, but listening to the talk and knowing that he could (but probably wont) leave is just still paying for that mistake back in 2003.

Tyson money is more of a factor here... but Tuberville isn't going anywhere.

And if they were not beating Bama so much they wouldn't want him to leave. <_<

The Bamaham media is busy at work claiming there is a "hang up" with the negotiations and Tubs might still leave! WJOX reports that there is one big hang-up left but I don't know what it is. Allegedly, it's not money for him or the assistants OR concerning facilities. Can't imagine what that might be? Also, Bamaham media might just be stirring the pot..... Hope they resolve this soon and the Arky job is filled with someone else. Istill don't believe he's leaving!

this was just posted by Phillip Marshall about 30 minutes ago:

Auburn football coach Tommy Tuberville and athletic director Jay Jacobs did not meet Wednesday as expected. Tuberville was out of the office and not expected to return.

Apparently, there are still contractual matters and other issues on the table. With Tuberville scheduled to leave town Thursday, it is uncertain when a things will be finally resolved.

THe rumor is supposedly the buyout is the "hang up", but he agreed to it so who knws...maybe that's what he had to take to get the contract, and now he wants a smaller buyout.."in case"

THE LATEST: Arkansas is rumored to be making a serious run at Tuberville, and sources indicate he is indeed interested. However, on Monday he agreed to an extension and raise in principle at Auburn, which obviously is not binding. Some people behind the scenes would have to get enough money to get him out of his contract at Auburn, and rumors have it that a legitimate effort is being made to do it. Unless the figure is negotiated down, the buyout is believed to be in the ballpark of $4-6 million.
http://arkansas.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=744965

But then he talks about Lane Kiffin

THE LATEST: It appears Kiffin is very much a strong candidate to replace Houston Nutt at Arkansas - so much so that word is floating around that this is a two-man race. While Tuberville would be a solid, safe hire, Kiffen might turn out to be a star. Otis Kirk reports that Kiffin's father, brother and former Ole Miss coach Ed Orgeron could be on the staff, also. Kiffen coached with Orgeron at USC. The reason talk is going around is because there have been rumors that Kiffin is not exactly happy in Los Angeles with owner Al Davis, and he might want to return to the college game anyway.

i can't really blame him for that, really. hindsight is 20/20 and maybe when he agreed to that contract before he didn't forsee himself being such a hot commodity. if that buyout stands in the way of furthering his career, i can't blame him one bit for trying to get a smaller one.
