First Practice Back

Rusty return from spring break

Neither Franklin nor Rhoads was thrilled with the first practice since a scrimmage on March 14.

Said Franklin: "It was exactly what I expected and didn't want. No telling what they did. I don't want to know. Hopefully, my children weren't around them. They, I'm sure, had a nice time. They are back and they look like they haven't done anything since they left. It was a really poor job on my part today getting them prepared to go out there."

Said Rhoads: "It was a big challenge for these kids today to come off practicing on (March 14) and come back on March 25 and pick up right where they left off. There were some signs they did that and some signs of rust that certainly were expected. In our profession, you just don't tolerate it, whether it was expected or not."

I think I said something recently about not liking the fact they had Spring Break toward the end of spring practice - a crucial learning time that needs total focus. Hopefully they'll have their heads on straight this Sat.

Yeah I don't like that either. Sounds like they had a little too much fun on their spring break.

I put the blame on the coaches. You know what college kids(at least most of them) do on spring break. Did you really expect them to be on point the first day back? You either schedule spring practice better - have spring break be at the beginning of practice, or you just don't let them go on spring break.

Franklins quote kinda bothers me. How are you going to prepare them? Go on spring break with them?

Maybe I'm blowing it out of proportion, but it seems like we moved ahead a few steps up until SB, and then took a couple steps back for the last week of practice.

When you start spring practice in February, this is what happens. It seems like Auburn starts spring practice earlier than any team in the country. Why?

I'm sure there is a good reason, but I can't think of a one right now. I think the coaches may have out-smarted themselves on this one.

With all the emphasis on passing, the QBs shoulders must have all been sore and with the running backs all hurt, a long break may have been needed regardless of what the original plan was.

They said they were a little rusty, not that they forgot how far ten yards were. I think we are blowing it up a little bit. They got a week off, they are a little rusty, they will get back into it and be fine. We are going to be off for several months here in 8 days, they will get rusty then too, but it is okay.

The only positive is the injuries, but is another couple weeks really going to make that big of a difference? I just feel like it's really counterproductive to have that big break when they need to be focused on learning the schemes of two new coordinators.

Maybe they're just physically rusty, but we'll find out on Sat I guess.

I think they start srping practice so early to give players more time to heal should they suffer any serious injuries during spring practice.

I guess I should have stated that I think that SB should be before or after spring practice. Shoot, I know what most kids do on spring break. They go to the beach, chase skirt and kill brain cells.

I think we need to chill....and get ready for Sat. :).

But, really......what's the noise about? I like the early spring for two reasons....

1. It does help if the event of injuries

2. It gives these guys two months to get ready for finals without all this stuff in the way. Many of them need all the help they can get. We don't need any grade outs going into the summer.

I can see the finals issue being a pretty good reason I guess. Didn't think of that. I've pretty much suppressed any memories of taking tests from my memory forever.
