Obama Comes Out Against Concealed Carry

By Amanda Carpenter

Thursday, April 3, 2008

Barack Obama is embracing anti-gun policies in the run-up to a Democratic presidential debate scheduled on the one-year anniversary of the Virginia Tech shootings.

“I am not in favor of concealed weapons,” Obama told the Pittsburgh Tribune. “I think that creates a potential atmosphere where more innocent people could (get shot during) altercations.”

These remarks break from Obama’s previous moderate rhetoric on gun control.

While campaigning in Idaho in February, Obama promised, “I have no intention of taking away folks’ guns.”

Obama elaborated later that month in a political forum sponsored by ABC News and the Politico. He said: “I think it's important for us to recognize that we've got a tradition of handgun ownership and gun ownership generally. And a lot of law-abiding citizens use it for hunting, for sportsmanship, and for protecting their families. We also have a violence on the streets that is the result of illegal handgun usage. And so I think there is nothing wrong with a community saying we are going to take those illegal handguns off the streets. And cracking down on the various loopholes that exist in terms of background checks for children, the mentally ill. We can have reasonable, thoughtful gun control measure that I think respects the Second Amendment and people's traditions."

Obama’s tough talk on gun control may be prompted by Philadelphia-based Democratic leaders who are pressuring Clinton and Obama to adopt harder stances on gun control. This issue is expected to come up in ABC News’ Democratic debate on April 16 in Philadelphia. 32 people were shot to death on the campus of Virginia Tech by Seung-Hui Cho April 16, 2007.

Obama’s new hardline liberal position differs from his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton and GOP candidate John McCain, who both are for concealed-carry.

The Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA) said in a statement Obama should apologize and revise his stance. “Barack Obama ignorantly believes that legally-armed Americans are as reckless and irresponsible as the criminals with whom his political sympathies evidently law,” said CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb. “He has been insisting for months he supports the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms, but here he is now campaigning in Pennsylvania, stating essentially he would prefers Americans not exercise that right.”

Where's the link..where did this come from..this story seems to have a pretty hard right slant to it. Being against concealed weapons is hardly sending the message that he wants to take peoples guns away.

I think tougher gun control to ensure safety is a good thing. I can't see why people need machine guns, be able to carry a concealed weapon, etc. Is the concealed weapon thing so the deer can't see it? ;)

So let me get this straight...we need to have a hidden gun on us so the criminal can't see it? HUH?

Maybe the criminal would not commit the act if he saw we had the gun in the first place. Or maybe, if the criminal's gun wasn't concealed he wouldn't be able to even commit the crime.

Not to be rude, but what difference does it make that you don't see the need for something? Not all weapons are for deer hunting. What other laws could we possibly pass against guns that would have any effect on shootings at places like VT?

I think you would be hard pressed to find any of these mass shootings where the person committing the crime had a concealed carry permit - but all it would have taken was one person legally carrying a pistol to stop someone in that situation. As a matter of fact I would challenge you or anyone to compare the statistics of people licensed to carry firearms vs the general population.

What is your idea of "tougher" gun control? Would it be the equivalant of "tougher" DUI laws - like banning alcohol or cars, DUIs and car accidents kill more people than firearms...

So if we shouldn't be able to conceal them, would you be ok if we just wear them on our hip for everyone to see...wild west style?

No different than you posting form Yahoo, CBS or CNN. B/c they would never have have a left wing slant on the news they report now would they? :poke:

Well shoot, let pass some more gun legislation for that one. I have always wanted to carry my pistol on my hip like the old west. :)

As GoAU stated, there's no possible way through any type of gun control etc. to prevent tragedies like Va. Tech, Northern Illinois, countless Malls and public forums where some deranged individual decides to take a bunch of innocent people out. If you decided to pull up to the door of a crowded business, jump out of your car and quickly start taking out everyone in sight with a shotgun, handgun, machine gun...whatever...who could stop you before you did unthinkable damage? What gun control law could stop you?

The old saying about guns don't kill people, people kill people, is spot on. If it's not a gun, it'll be something else. If someone is SICK enough in their mind to decide to do something like that, they'll find a way. No tougher gun control laws will prevent anyone from being f'd up in the head.

Agree. But this concealed weapon stance Obama is taking is not unreasonable and you all know it.

You CAN carry it on your hip. But you still need a concealed carry permit to do so. Why would I carry a gun visibly on my hip in public? If the bad guy sees my gun, he knows to deal with me first. If he does not see a gun then I have a better chance to stop the bad guy. If you rob a bank, who do you take out first? The teller? No. The guard. Why? Because you know he has a gun.

You libs are all the same. It's like trying to force the feds to publish just how they listen in on terrorists' phone calls. An intelligent person does not show his hand to the enemy.

bull****. Any time you disarm me, you are taking my guns away. In England you can own a gun. You just have to have it in an approved safe. Ammunition Separate from the gun. And can only use it for self defense if you are dying. That is achmed's idea of not allowing concealed carry. He is backed by the most left-winged groups in the country. I'm sure he gets and A+ from the Brady bunch.

You're an idiot. If he takes away my right to concealed carry, then he is essentially disarming me in public. You know this but your continual worship of all things achmed has clouded any and all common sense. Here's one for you, if your mother and sister are getting raped in front of your eyes and you somehow got hold of a gun, would you throw it away because it would be bad to use it? Now keep in mind that if you had the gun already, Mr. bad guy wouldn't be on top of your mama and sister at all. You are siding with a man who wants to allow the people in my life to be in potential danger without me being able to protect them. I would hate to be under your care. Anything bad ever happens, everybody will know daddy's no help. Unless he's still attached to achmed's ass and achmed's security detail saves them. Be a victim if you want, but don't EVER expect me to side with left-wing nut-less wonders like you and achmed. Achmed has just shown his true colors....left-wing pinko.

Acmed's a gun hater #1

Achmed's a gun hater #2

Achmed's a gun hater #3

Achmed's a gun hater #4

Achmed's a gun hater #5

Achmed's a gun hater #6

These are just form page 1 of a search. It's the same crap over and over. He believes in the individuals right to own a gun, he just wants to make it damn near impossible to buy one or even use it. The guy is no friend of gun owners. If you think he is, then you are probably not a gun owner.

You said:

Or maybe, if the criminal's gun wasn't concealed he wouldn't be able to even commit the crime.

To which I replied:

Yeah, because murderers and robbers are more worried about violating a concealed carry law than they are the murder law.

A concealed carry law ONLY affects law abiding citizens...and in NO WAY deters a would be violent criminal.
