Playstation 3

give me a good excuse to cough up the money for one. I have it in my head that I want one so I can play games and have a Bluray player. I still can't believe they are $400 and up. I have the wife convinced that that this is the route to go.

I really wanted the 60GB b/c the hardware emulator is BC with the ps2, the 80GB has a software emulator that is BC although it seems to be slightly inferior, but who knows which one is better and is it so much better that it is worth the price. I am just about played out on the games I have for the ps2. I am looking forward to GT5 which is one reason that I am wanting one.

So give me an excuse to buy one or convince me to buy a Bluray player and buying an Xbox360.

If you're interested in BlueRay, ya might as well stick w/ a PS3. Cheaper than buying the xb3 and a separate player. Though I have heard XB might be coming out w/ a BR version of their XB3, now that hi def is done. Might check into that, or wait....

If you are buying it for a game system, get a 360. A ton more games, better framerates etc.

Personally, I'm a fan of home theater items being stand alone units. And you can pick up a Samsung Blu Ray player for ~240 on eBay all day long.

But if your primary goal is a blu ray player, and gaming is far secondary...go with the PS3...you'll get some gaming, but also have the blu ray player as well.

I was wondering what they were going to do since HD-DVD is officially dead. This sounds like something that I might can weasel my into getting later on. I am leaning to the PS3 the more I think about it.

I am more interested in the BluRay side than I am the gaming side, but if I do get one then GT5 will be bought without a doubt. I am a sucker for the racing and sports games. I would imagine that before too long that more games for the PS3 will be released. I agree with the home theater being separate, the only issue is that I have two LCD's in the house and one is in the living room (47in LG) and the other is in the bedroom (26in Vizio). I just don't like the idea of having one in the bedroom. Now if I had one in the office I would be set. But I am not willing to cough up $500 for another TV and then $400 on a gaming system and then not play it that much. To much money to justify. Plus I would want to watch BluRay movies in the living room and not so much in the bedroom.

Let me tell you something

Buying the PS3 was one of the best purchases I ever gotten.

I use it for my HDTV as my Bluray player ALL THE TIME. It is perfect

I use it for my games and it is perfect playing games like COD4, MLB The Show, etc....and there are PLENTY of great games now out for the PS3 and some great ones for '08

All my friends had 360's last year but this year they have been getting PS3's because EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM are tired of getting RROD's every few months. One friend is on his 4th 360 and he leaves it in an open space with plenty of room for vent

Ditto for me.

When I purchased the PS3, it was basically to have the Blu-Ray player since I was going to buy one anyway. I figured I might as well get a Blu-Ray player that can play games also, mostly for my son who has been wanting to upgrade from his regular X-Box for some time now. This way we both got something we wanted.

Well, I had not idea it was basically it's own media center also. For the movies and TV shows I download, I used to have to connect my laptop to the TV to watch them, which was a pain for me. Now all I have to do is copy them over to the PS3 either by connecting my external hard drive to it or streaming them from my laptop. We also use the PS3 to view our pictures on the HDTV instead of using the computer to do that. Also, with the PS3, you can connect any USB keyboard, wireless USB keybooard that has a wireless adapter, or Bluetooth keyboard to it. This comes in handy since you can surf the internet with the PS3 instead of using the game controller or the remote. Oh yeah, just like in the past, you will have to purchase the remote separately.

The PS3 has now become my home entertainment centerpiece.

Thanks Ranger! Now that is an excuse for me to go buy one! I have been wanting one for a couple of months now and I need that push to get off my wallet, blow the dust out and spend some money.

Yeah, the media center option is the biggest reason that I recommend it to anyone. I was about to buy a $200 expansion port that would stay connected to my TV for my laptop. You can imagine how happy I was to realize I did not need to do that after I realized what all the PS3 could do.

It also plays Divx and Xvid formatted movies from a file or disc, so you don't have to worry about having to convert to DVD format. I really don't burn movies to disc much anymore though since I can just watch them through the PS3.

I have all 3(360, Wii, and PS3) and they are all worth their price. But another great thing about the PS3 is the blu-ray player is able to access the internet and update its firmware when updates are available as many of the stand alone blue ray players right now do not have that capability. so you will always have the latest blu-ray firmware available.

IMO

360-better for strictly gaming and online playing

Wii-love the first party software and is a blast with friends

PS3-blu-ray player is great, online is lacking though, but it does have MLB the Show which is the only good baseball game on the market.

Wii sports = best drunk games ever

I have fun on the Wii and the first few go rounds are a lot of fun

But, I got tired of it quickly

Smash brothers was a new interest in it but on the whole the game wasn't anything groundbreaking

Are you sure this was not what you meant to have said? :poke::lol:

We have had our Wii for about a week and have played it every night. My son keeps kicking my butt at bowling, so I am not giving up until I beat him. Also, so far we have played each other twice in baseball and finished in a tie both times.

We rented Smash Brothers and my wife tried to play it, but said she could not figure out how to play it with the Wii controls. Since we rented it, there were not directions and she has not looked them up on the internet yet. I have heard several people say it was a fun game.

Anybody played Mario vs. Sonic at the Olympics? That looks sort of fun. I am also going to try out one of the fishing games next, either Rapala or Sega Bass Fishing.

Buddy, when you're hammered...Wii sports is a blast. It doesn't get old.

Drunk with friends is about the only time I play my Wii anymore.

Get a PS3, I love the thing. I was one of the early adopters, I've had mine since Dec. '07, I got a 60 gig. It is honestly one of the best purchases ever. The games available are phenomenal, for those that say there are not any good games available, they aren't following the system at all. A year ago, nothing great out, but now there are tons of incredible games out there.

Check out "Uncharted: Drake's Fortune". Easily the most beautiful game anywhere right now, every time I turn it on it still amazes me with the subtle little things you notice the longer you play. Texture details, scenic environments, and the character's clothes even appear wet when you go in the water, and gradually dry!

What do you get with 360? An overrated shooter called Halo that requires no real skill to play? Project Gotham Racing? Oh and a system that is notorious for technical failure.

Give me Metal Gear Solid 4 and Gran Turismo 5 any day.

I could continue, but just get a PS3, you won't regret it.

The title support is overwhelmingly in the 360s favor. It's not even close. There is nothing on PS3 that can come remotely close to Gears of War or Bioshock.

It's not just MS fan boys who agree on the title support. And there aren't even too many Playstation homers who wouldn't agree that 360 stomps PS3 right now in terms of games. Especially when you consider the fact that cross platform games run at a higher framerate than they do on the PS3.

GT5 and MGS4 aren't even available yet. Yet Gears and racing titles like PGR and Forza have been out for years on the 360.

You want to argue that the PS3 is a better buy in this scenario because of the Blu Ray player, you'll get no argument from me. But to suggest that the PS3 has better title support is laughable.

Another selling point would be on-line play. While X-Box Live is a great component, and Microsoft really did online well, Sony is finally starting to close the gap. And their online gameplay is free. Instead of paying 8 bucks a month or 50 a year for the "privilege" of on-line play, any game except a monthly-fee game like Final Fantasy Online or any other MMORPG is totally free to play on-line.

The 360 has more games in volume but I have played the 360 plenty and think the PS3 has plenty of great games even at the moment and even more coming out this year

Bioshock was quite over-rated, imo.

Gears Of War was fun though

Bioshock was one of the best console games I've ever played. But that's really just an opinion thing. Some people don't like the art direction.

Yea, my 360 friends love it

I just...I dunno, I didn't love it that much

As for the Wii, I stand by my statement and I know I am not alone. My other friends with Wii LOVE IT but they even agree that some of the games get boring and they don't play it that much anymore though Smash Brothers has changed that a little

Almost all have gotten another system which is a PS3 for all but one which got a 360

The framerate thing is going to be a thing of the past very soon. There are also some must play PS3 exclusives such at Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and the upcoming Metal Gear Sold 4: Guns of the Patriots and Gran Turismo 5 Prologue. If you love baseball like I do, MLB the Show 08 is incredible.

More games =/= better games.

You'll love the PS3.

I'm getting the PS3. I've got some technophile friends and they all weighed in with if you're into online gaming the 360 is better, if you're not it's a wash. But now with Blu Ray coming out on top, I'm definitely getting the PS3.

  • 4 weeks later...

Well I stopped by BestBuy this evening and picked up a 40GB PS3. Got it home and hooked it up and played MLB the Show for a couple of hours. The wife asked me to pick up a movie when I bought it and I have head the Disney PIXAR stuff looks awesome. I actually picked up a copy of Ratatouille and it looks awesome. I am very pleased and this is $400 well spent. I can't believe how great it looks.

I was going to say get the biggest HD you can. A LOT of PS3 games require large installs (I've heard of up to 6 GB for a single game) so if you play a lot you may be clearing space a lot.

As far as games a lot of good games come on both anyway... there aren't too many exclusives anymore. The only good exlusive on the XBOX 360 I can think of off hand is Gears of War (Halo is for 12 year-olds).
