Firefox 3

Recommended Posts

I've been goofing around with Firefox 3 on Windows here at work for a few days. Gotta say, it's really fast. And for those who have experienced memory leaks in the past with FF (I never did at home, but here at work I had some problems), they seem to have solved that. I've had it open now for about 5 hours at work with multiple tabs open and it's still only using 82MB and been steady at that or slightly less for a while.

The main thing is, it's very fast. Much faster than FF2 or IE7.

The latest version is Firefox 3 Beta 5. Do a Google search on that and go download it. Just install it to it's own folder so your FF2 doesn't get overwritten. Most extensions won't work, though IE Tab does.

I've heard good things about firefox 3 but usually stay away from beta versions. May go grab this though, and give it a shot.

I will use it but am suspect

Firefox 2 has really slowed down for me as of late

I am hoping the loadup time is less and it uses less memory

I know that a few months ago somebody posted a tweak you could perform to Firefox to get it to run a little faster. Here is a new one that is a little bit different that I have came across. I noticed some difference after I made the changes on both of my laptops:

Here is an easy way to make Mozilla Firefox load pages at least 3x faster!

1. Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipelining

network.http.proxy.pipelining

network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to 300

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer.

Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0".

4. Restart your browser and you will see a major change.

I use opera most of the time. Firefox was slow and locked up. Safari was slow also. I tried this little tip and I can tell a difference. Good tip, thanks.

Someone needs to make an Auburn theme for Firefox. The website has themes for a ton of other schools, including LSU and UGA, and THE (ever overrated) Ohio State University, ugh.

I'm actually working on that as we speak. It's not as easy as I had hoped, but i'm working on it. Hopefully I'll have one together over the next few months.
