Quick start on offense

During the 2004 season, the Auburn offense consistently got off to a good start early on in the game, which was key to making the opponent work from behind. In a recent interview, Coach Tony Franklin spoke about his offense, showing results later in the game as the defense was worn down from the spread offense with no-huddle.

IMO, I would rather see Auburn’s offense jumping out to a quick start but there is more than one way to skin a cat. With this in mind, here is a comparison of the 2007 Troy Offense, the 2007 Auburn offense and the 2004 Auburn offense, during their first four possessions of the game.

2007 Auburn offense ( First 4 possessions of each game):

* Clemson game not included

48 possessions

Scoring: 20 (14 TD / 6 FG) 41.7%

Punt: 21 (43.7%)

Turnover: 6 (12.5%)

3 & Out: 15 (31.2%)

6.2 plays per possession for 34.5 yards per possession

2007 Troy Offense:

48 possessions

Scoring: 19 (13 TD / 6 FG) 39.6%

Punt: 23 (47.9%)

Turnover: 6 (12.5%)

3 & Out: 15 (31.2%)

6.1 plays per possession for 32.6 yards per possession

2004 Auburn Offense:

52 possessions

Scoring: 30 (21 TD / 9 FG) 57.7%

Punt: 12 (23.1%)

Turnover: 7 (13.5%)

3 & Out: 9 (17.3%)

6.2 plays per possession for 41.9 yards per possession

Yeah, the TN (regular season), ARK, and GA games come to mind for '04 when you talk about quick starts. Right off the bat you knew it was going to be our day.

Interestingly, I was down in Baton Rouge this year and had a similar feeling....except the result after the fast start did not pan out.

Regardless, as we all know, "30+ points = victory" ;)

I believe the only two exceptions to the 2004 season were Ole Miss and Bammer. We struggled to score anything in the first half against the Rebs, until Campbell took it in from 1 yard out, and then kinda opened up the floodgates to a 35-14 win

The team was very tired coming into that game after 9 straight games without a bye. We had 121 yards on 15 plays from our first 3 offensive possessions but ZERO points to show for it. Luckily, the defense held the Rebel offense in check until the AU offense began to finish off their drives.

I wonder if this offense will be as good as the one we had in 2005? That was Cox first year at qb like this will be either Todd or Burns' first. Can't wait!!!!! WDE
