Former Auburn running back Hoppe dies

Was a former teacher and football coach in Georgia

Chattanooga, Tenn. — Robert George "Bobby" Hoppe, a halfback on Auburn University's 1957 national championship team, has died. He was 73.

He died at his home Monday, Heritage Funeral Home and Cremation Services announced.

Hoppe, a Chattanooga native, had moved back to his hometown from Clarksville after his wife of 37 years, Sherry, retired as president of Austin Peay University.

The three-year letterman at Auburn was a former teacher and coach in Georgia and was also a coach in Tennessee.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Kevin Hoppe of Athens; a sister, Joan Voiles of Chattanooga; and a grandson.

A memorial service is set at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Grace Episcopal Church, with a visitation beginning at 1 p.m.
