Waco, Texas- The Auburn equestrian team won its first National Championship Saturday in Hunt Seat, 5-2, defeating second-seed Texas A&M at the 2008 Varsity Equestrian National Championships. In individual championships, both Julie Gibbes and Rebecca Rifkin lost in their opening rounds. This is the second National Championship for Auburn; the Tigers previously won the overall National Championship in 2006.

It is so fun to win a discipline title like Hunt Seat where the trophy is named after one of your former assistant coaches, Herb Schneider. We are so proud to be bringing a National Championship back to Auburn."

Cool. Good for them. War Eagle ladies!

Quick question: what's up w/ the article saying the team "won its first national championship" in the lead sentence, then in the same paragraph saying it is the second one?

Also, does anyone know if this is an "official" NCAA championship? It seems like last time it wasn't recognized by the NCAA for some reason...

Apparently Hunt Seat National Champion is different than Overall National Champion.

Maybe its like winning "Best in Breed" but not "Best in Show."

Or if dogs aren't your thing...

Maybe its like winning the Swimsuit competition but not Miss America.

There are actually three NC's awarded in Equestrian. 1. Overall 2. Hunt Seat and 3. Western. In 2006 Auburn won the overall championship. This is their FIRST Hunt Seat title. This is not an NCAA sanctioned sport just yet, and there are about 20 or so schools competing.
