CFN "Way-too-Early" Bowl predictions

Surprized no one has posted this, since it's been out several days. College Footbal News' way-too-early prognostication on the bowls for 2008-2009. Way too early is right, so I don't put any stock intheir predictions, but hey, it's football talk in May and I'm jonesin'...

http://cfn.scout.com/2/754896.html

Highlights:

They have Auburn vs. Penn State in the Capital One Bowl (sound vaguely familiar?)

BCS Championship: Florida vs. OSU (deja vu all over again)

Other SEC teams:

Arkansas vs Nebraska--Independence Bowl (Shreveport)

Alabama vs Wake Forest-Music City Bowl (May the Tide begin and end their season with ACC losses!)

South Carolina vs Boston College-Chick Filet Bowl

MSU- Liberty Bowl (Nice trip to Memphis for Croom & Co.--travel arrangements shouldn't be too tough)

UT vs Oklahoma- Cotton Bowl

LSU vs MIchigan-Outback Bowl (Les Miles finally goes to Michigan, in a way)

UGA vs Va. Tech-Sugar Bowl

...and the PapaJohn Bowl in B'ham, according to them, will not have another bowl-eligible SEC team qualify for their SEC berth, so they'll go out of conference. (Guess UK, Ole MIss, & Vandy stay home)

Clemson in the Orange as ACC champion (Hope they destroy Bama!)

And finally, a nice tip of the hat to the SEC on the BCS Championship:

The way-too-early scenario (that might/will suddenly change at some point this summer): No one goes unbeaten; Ohio State beats USC in L.A. to build up enough style points to overcome one acceptable Big Ten loss to be the begrudging choice by the voters as the nation's No. 1 team; Florida loses twice, but beats Georgia and wins the SEC championship. Repeat that exact scenario except replace Ohio State with USC (who'll lose one Pac 10 game) and Florida with Georgia, and you might have it.

Basically, a two-loss SEC champion will have far more cachet than any other team with a blemish, even a one-loss West Virginia, ACC champion or Big 12 champion. After the last two national title games, it's going to take something special to keep the SEC champion out.

I saw this and didn't like it.

We were 3rd in there list of possible replacements for Georgia to the Sugar Bowl behind Florida and LSU. Shouldn't we be ranked ahead of both of those teams at this point? We beat Florida on the road at there place last year and should be better this year while they stay the same. LSU doesn't have a quarterback.

Florida is overrated by too many people. All they are is Tebow and Harvin. Their offense is predictable and their defense sucks. Michigan stomped them.

If their offense is so predictable, how did they score so many points last year? Florida's offense will be scary good this year if Moody can produce and take some carries off of Tebow. Harvin and Rainey are two of the fastest players in the SEC. Their D won't be back to where it needs to be, but it should be improved. I'm not sure about LSU. They'll have probably one of the best D lines in the country(right up there with us). Not sure if they can come together on offense. They always have playmakers though. We'll just have to wait and see how their QB does.

They aren't basing who goes where on what we did last year. If we go out and take care of business, we'll be just fine. We tend to get too worried about who else did what. The only thing Auburn football can control is what Auburn football does on the field. The rest will just have to take care of itself.

Not saying this is a good or bad prediction about us, but if we are in the capital one bowl, no way is PSU going to be in the game. My roommate is a big PSU fan, and he said its going to be a long season for them.

Naturally I'm something of a homer when it comes to confidence in my Tigers. But trying to be objective, I can see the argument going something like this: "Auburn's offense was pitiful last year. They now have new coordinators on both sides of the ball, and just because they threw out last year's offensive scheme doesn't mean the new one will work any better. Sure they can get up for one game against anyone--as they did against Florida last year--but do they have what it takes to stay in a season-long championship chase?" (Actually, although we beat Florida and lost to LSU, both of those games were so close--last minute plays--that they may as well have been settled with the initial coin toss.)

Of course, my biased opinion is that our defense will not miss a lick--I think the talent and CTT will see to that regardless of coodinator. Our offense can't help but be better (the bowl game was a nice preview), and just one more touchdown in our losses would have given us an 11-1 regular season last year. The solid kicking game returns intact. And the travel schedule is on our side this year. I'm doing my best not to anger the football gods through over-confidence! B)

Arkansas vs Nebraska--Independence Bowl (Shreveport)

Are the Bammer's not going to be mad about this? I wonder if they can get a refund on their hotel reservations they've already made?

Defense (clap clap): I agree, UF should be lighting up the scoreboards this year if Moody can take some heat off Tebow. I see the UF/UGA game as being huge this year. As long as we take care of business I have no problem seeing us in Atl playing either UF or UGA.

Let's hope your right. Coach Tubs thought the same in 2004. "Who would have thought that an undefeated SEC team could not make it into the national championship. I personally feel that had one of the media darling SEC teams such as Florida, Georgia, or LSU teams would have been in the same position they would have been playing for the crystal football. Media support and coverage play a big part in how the bowl committees select their teams. I mean if media perception, opinion and coverage on how great a team is throughout a season is true it must be fact. (sarcasm). Let's face it there are plenty of good teams left out of BCS games each year due to lack of media coverage or media perception no matter what their records were at the end of the year. The only way to fix the problem it is to go to a playoff system and settle it on the field. How can one truly declare a national champion under the current system if there are several undefeated teams at the end once the dust settles. How can a team not lay claim to a national championship if they were undefeated at the end of the year. Just because they did not get selected to play in the BCS national championship game does not mean that they are not a champion in my eyes. A prime example is the 2004 Auburn team. Just food for thought and my two cents worth. Wareagle!!!!!! <_<

In regards to the comment about leaving an SEC team out... the pollsters may actually want a competitive game for once, thus leaving a team out...

... or just let Auburn in the mix so they can screw us over yet again. If 3 teams go undefeated and the top 2 are ahead of Auburn, no way we catch up. I don't care about the past, but the pollsters don't like to leapfrog teams that haven't lost that they kept in the top 2.

My thoughts:

- Florida being the pick isn't a surprise. Their offense will be very good next year and their D can only improve next year though I don't think their depth is that great AND their DL got absolutely OWNED by our OL last year and I got the impression they were very soft.

- Arkansas/Alabama bowl games seem reasonable places they may go though I think South Carolina may switch with one of those two teams and the two teams go to the Peach Bowl (Yes, I said Peach Bowl)

- Georgia ending up in the Sugar Bowl wouldn't shock me. Either SEC Champion or At-Large. I wouldn't mind VT but I hope they have a solid record as I don't want some 3-4 loss ACC team barely ranked if we do play in the BCS game

- Clemson is picked almost yearly to win the ACC. They almost always have a chance the last few weeks and choke it away

- I see Southern Cal destroying Ohio State. Really badly too even if Sanchez at QB (in that he has little experience)

All in all, LSU winning the NC with 2 losses last year WILL help any 2-loss SEC team this year, imo
