Safety Tip for Grillers on Memorial Day

Recommended Posts

It is likely that some of you might be cooking on your propane fueled grill or using a camper or RV having a propane tank over the upcoming Memorial Day Holiday. Or perhaps you are visiting with another family who is using a propane tank for similar purposes. This is just a tip to check out the tank valve before you buy it, or see one in service that has been contaminated as described below.

Methamphetamine cooks are buying propane tanks from the exchanges at Wal-Mart, Kroger, and other stores; and emptying them of the propane gas. Then they fill the propane tanks with anhydrous ammonia, which is used to produce Methamphetamine. After they are finished with the propane tanks, they return them to the store. The tanks may be refilled with propane, without knowing that they had been contaminated with anhydrous ammonia, and are resold. Anhydrous ammonia is very corrosive and will damage the brass valve in a propane cylinder. This deterioration will lead to cracking of the valve body or its components and can ultimately result in a violent, unexpected expulsion of the valve from the cylinder, causing personal injury or death. It can be very dangerous when hooked up to a grill, recreation vehicle, etc.

You should inspect the propane tank for any blue or greenish residue around the valve areas. If there are evidences of these substances, do not purchase the propane tank and advise the vendor of your findings.

And I thought the decreased quality of taste was the only punishment for those who switched from the blessing of charcoal. :poke:

I finally switched from charcoal, and there is a decrease in flavor....until you buy hickory chips or some other flavoring chip. I now actually prefer that taste over the charcoal taste which would have been akin to blasphemy for me a year ago.

Don't you want to taste the meat and not the heat?
