Tigermike 3,651
Is this a galaxy far far away? Actually no. The picture is of NASA's Mars Phoenix Lander parachuting down to Mars. The picture was taken by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. This is the first time that a spacecraft has imaged the final descent of another spacecraft onto a planetary body. You better enjoy the pictures while you can. If elected Obama plans to stop future NASA projects and divert the money to domestic welfare programs and other pet projects. Who knows, maybe the hospital where his wife works will get another wing. All of us here at Marshall in Huntsville are a little concerned over Obama. and McCain, and Hillary. I would think McCain would be the least worrisome of the three. I also worry with Bud Cramer stepping down. I don't think either of the democratic nominees are very strong and I think Parker Griffith is a flat out idiot. I'm not sure any candidate will have the pull in congress to continue the steady stream of defense money coming into Huntsville. I also remember Kerry's promise to kill the Missle Defense program during his campaign. To pull the plug on a program with billions invested and nearing completion makes no sense whatsoever. But I fear that Obama or Hilliary have similar ambitions.

The Huntsville Times reported during the primaries four years ago Griffith gave $500 to Howard (The Scream) Dean. That tells me a lot about Griffith. I think McCain will be more reluctant to pull the plug on missile defense. Obama has already stated that he will pull the plug on it and that he will divert the Ares/Constellation project funds towards day care. AU_tiger_2000: We here in the missile defense field feel the same. I still think we are safer with McCain in office than the other two. Awesome photo you posted Justin5. I can't remember the site, but NASA has a site with some awesome photos out there.

So ObamaBoyII, when Obama said "The early education plan will be paid for by delaying the NASA Constellation Program for five years,,,," what exactly did he mean? How would putting the Constellation Program on hold for five years not be tantamount to killing it? What happens to NASA's scientists for five years? Those scientists that can, retire. Many of those that cannot retire find jobs elsewhere - maybe teaching High School math for Obama, or working in China's space program. Then, at some indefinite "minimum" time down the road, the U.S. space program restarts and they come back. Or not. But NASA would be starting over. Obama has said: "We're not going to have the engineers and the scientists to continue space exploration if we don't have kids who are able to read, write and compute." By that same logic, we should also suspend medical research grants and close down the National Institute of Health because we're not going to have physicians and biologists if we don't have kids who are able to read, write and compute. This is the part of McCain's platform that worries me. The bottom line: he wants to cut some $160 billion in discretionary spending out of a budget that totals a bit over $800 billion, said his chief economic adviser, Doug Holtz-Eakin. Only a tiny portion of that is earmarks. If McCain gets his way, the government would eliminate 20% of all discretionary spending. Discretionary spending includes everything but entitlements like Social Security and Medicare, which are automatically funded each year and not part of this calculation. It is rumored that a large chunk of that $160 billion will come from NASA. If I was a NASA employee I might not be concerned but as a blue badged contractor it gives me pause. Here's the link. I have a friend that is a "blue badger" at the Data Center, I will have to hit him up. I haven't heard those rumors, but that is good info to know. We have some NASA contracts with the company that I work for. I will have to keep my ears open to see what they know.
