I was shocked to see the 7-13 record against Top 10 until I read the ensuing explanation. For me it feels really good when I think about how great our program is functioning right now-especially when you take into consideration that 2 if not 3 of those top 10 losses were down to the wire. Proof-positive that CTT is an awesome coach-I remember when the expectation going into a game against most(if not all) top 20 teams came with an extrememly uneasy feeling and the hope that we would simply put up a good fight vs the current expectation that we will win and or compete down to the last tick with ANY ranked team we play. Thanks to Coach T and Co. for putting some solid distance between our program and those dark days! War Eagle!!!
aucanucktiger 1,863
It would be interesting (and probably more than a bit depressing) to compare our record vs. ranked opponents, with the records vs. ranked opponents of schools that won national championships over the last 5, 10 and 20 years. It's not just what you do, it's when you do it (see e.g. 2004, 1993, 1988, 1972, 1958, etc)
quietfan 233
And this year (2008) I expect LSU, WVU, and UGA to be Top 10 when we play 'em, Tennessee should be at least Top 20. Petrino, Nutt, or Croom could get into the lower ranks if they catch some breaks. Plus a ranked bowl opponent and if we're lucky, the SECCG. Keep it going, Coach! (Bama might also slip into lower rankings earlier in the season, but I don't expect them to survive there 'til November. Then again, if they stink against Clemson on opening day, they may never break the Top 25, what with back-to-back road trips to Arkansas & Georgia as their 4th & 5th games, and later trips to Tennessee & LSU.) ...Just hope nobody gives us any "weak schedule" crap for UT-Martin. FYI...ESPN's top 10 has us ranked at the 10-spot. Here are the other 9 and their qualifiers for "weak schedule" 1. OSU: Youngstown St., Ohio, 2. Georgia: Ga. Southern 3. OU: Chattanooga(and most of the other teams in the big 2 1/2 conference) 4. USC: no "weak" OC Opponents but they do have the pleasure of playing Stanford and Washington and since I have no respect for the Pac-10 and I hate USC and the Pac-10 in general, I refuse to give any credit.... 5. Florida: Citadel 6. Missouri: S.E. Missouri State, Buffalo, Nevada 7. Clemson: Citadel, S. Carolina State 8. Texas: Florida Atlantic, UTEP, Rice 9. W. Virgina: Villanova, E. Carolina, Marshall As far as I can tell, these guys will be living in glass houses just as big if not bigger than ours so I don't think UT Martin/La Monroe on our schedule will be enough to argue against-especially since only UGA and FL will be able to say they played in a conference as tough as the SEC and for either of them to say they are better than us would mean that they'd have to prove it on the field. Who can forget 2004....Overall I agree with what your saying, I just think that the ability not to see a contender from the SEC as the front runner of that beauty contest is insane. The difference in comparison to '04 IMO is that unless someone ranked outside of this current top 10 winds up getting to the #1 or #2 spot by the end of the year or we have another crazy year like '07, none of these teams are going to be able to argue that AU's schedule was significantly easier than theirs without risking serious criticism if not flat out ridicule-I mean just look at that list and tell me who could throw UT-Martin at us?? I believe that the '04 scenario with OU getting it handed to them by USC as well as the thrashing that OSU has taken from both FL and LSU has helped validate the strength of the SEC vs the other conferences-the SEC is and has been hot and on a major roll for sometime now and I think that success gives the SEC the advantage when it comes down to splitting hairs. From the political side of things, I believe it would be a fatal error for the talking heads to try and down play any undefeated or one loss SEC team vs the like from any other conference. Until the SEC starts losing more in head to head out of conference games AND we get a little farther away from '04 and the last two National Championships, no one could be dumb enough to down play any contenders(...sorry bama) from the SEC vs any other conference-especially the panties that don't play a conference championship game. Obviously this all plays out on the field and strange things can and do happen but IMO, if we take care of business, our schedule won't be the deciding factor vs anyone elses. P>S> When I say that "No one could be dumb enough" this doesn't include Holtz...
AUslug 1
I've noticed there has been a little bit of a backlash on how Auburn was treated in 2004. I have read several accounts on how the 04 team got shafted and they were underrated by the media at the time. I think it is because the UF and LSU have won the last two MNC's while stomping a traditonal power in Ohio State. Also Oklahoma has not helped their cause by losing back to back BCS games to Boise State and West Virgina. Stat, could you somehow break down the ranked teams by who they were and the record Auburn has against them?
aucanucktiger 1,863
"I've noticed there has been a little bit of a backlash on how Auburn was treated in 2004." Yeah, but it wasn't us that reaped the benefits of that backlash, it was a 1-loss MNC winner from the SEC...UF. There are still enough xenophobic idiots w/ votes that think the SEC is overrated and that (e.g.) there was no argument whatsoever for UGA getting into the MNC game @ the end of 2007. AUslug 1
There is no arguement for UGA getting into MNC game last year. You don't win the conference you shouldn't get to play for the MNC but it has happened in the past but that is the only reason why UGA didn't get a shot. They were the hottest team last year but LSU and Ohio State had the better numbers, is it fair...not my place to say.
