Jobs will introduce it on the 9th

Nobody is 100% sure when it will start selling but I have heard the week after, mid-June, and late-June

So, whenever it comes out, will you buy it?

I am 100% going to buy the 3G iPhone as the Edge network has been really hit or miss. I can get great service in some spots and terrible service in others.

My sister had 3G for a little while and said it was incredibly fast for her.

So...

3G + GPS + More Space + Introduction of Applications = Me buying it

Depends on the price. I'm darn close to buying an 8 gig Iphone now, dunno if the next gen Iphone will be of any use to me or not.

AT&T might end up subsidizing the phone - like they have with the blackberry. According to some, look for a price point in the $200 range.

AT&T is planning to put some extra shine on the even sleeker new Apple (AAPL) iPhone.

When the 3G iPhone is introduced this summer, AT&T, the exclusive U.S. iPhone sales partner with Apple, will cut the price by as much as $200, according to a person familiar with the strategy.

AT&T is preparing to subsidize $200 of the cost of a new iPhone, bringing the price down to $199 for customers who sign two-year contracts, the source says. Apple is expected to have two versions of the new iPhone, an 8-gigabyte-memory and a 16-gigabyte-memory model with price tags widely expected to be $399 and $499.

AT&T and Apple declined to comment.

I never bought the original iPhone. I am "old school" when it comes to cell phones. All I need it for is to make calls and send the occasional text message when necessary. I hardly ever use the EDGE network to access the internet. The few times I have is to check the weather when I may have been camping or umpiring if I saw or heard a storm in the distance.

Also, I can't see laying that much money down for a phone. All of my phones have been the sets I got for "free" whenever I signed a new contract. Heck, I just bought my first iPod a few months ago because I had a problem for paying so much for something so small. Before then, I had some cheap mp3 player that if it broke, I was not out much money.

The backlash begins: Users grumble about 3G iPhone features

iPhone 3G: The Stuff that Didn't Get Upgraded

So finally, at long last, the iPhone 3G has been announced. It has 3G (obviously) and GPS! Great news! But what about the other stuff we were expecting to get upgraded as well? Was anything updated other than those two features?

Yeah, the headphone jack is now flush. Otherwise, here's a list of stuff that's people were expecting, or at least hoping for, but didn't get in the new model:

*A 32GB model

*A better camera

*More RAM

*MMS

*A2DP Bluetooth for stereo streaming

*A camera on the front for videoconferencing

*Video capabilities

*Turn-by-turn navigation (will come with a 3rd party app, I'm sure)

*The ability to copy and paste

None of these are really dealbreakers, except maybe the lack of space for data hoarders, but it's disappointing that some of the more basic things didn't get a bump. I mean, we are talking about the second generation of the phone here. They couldn't improve the camera at all? Or give us some of the very basic things, like MMS and copy/paste that people have been clamoring for since day one? And I personally would be happy to pay the current iPhone's price for a 32GB iPhone 3G so the transition from my 60GB iPod wouldn't be such a kick in the pants.

Overall, we got what we were expecting, 3G and GPS, and essentially nothing else. And really, at the end of the day, those are the big features that really matter. 3G (along with the price drop) will sell phones, MMS won't. I know I'm being nitpicky, and really, I'm not all that disappointed. I'll still be buying one. But it just seems strange that nothing else besides those and a minor facelift were added to Apple's flagship handheld.

What do you guys think, were you expecting more upgrades here or are you happy with 3G and GPS alone?

If Tmobile carried the iPhone, I'd probably pick it up for $200. But AT&T has the worst coverage of any network in the country.

Everyone I know absolutely HATES AT&T's wireless coverage. And I know people who have in all over the southeast and VA.

I've never had a problem w/ coverage all that much. And to be honest, when I was in N.Ga, at Octoberfest, I'd have 4-5 bars of coverage, while others were flatlining. I know of a few black hole spots around Atlanta, but over all, I'm happy w/ my AT&T coverage.

My Dad is in Huntsville, and he just switched to AT&T for work. He's got an iPhone and can't talk to anyone. His phone ALWAYS drops coverage. And he and everyone at his work has an iPhone, none of them can use them inside the building they work (it's on university) because AT&T has probablems in buildings apparently.

I know at least 5 people with AT&T who always have to go outside to take calls so they can get bars.

I want to get it, but the only real upgrade is 3G. I cant justify getting it just for that. I'll stick with my original one and get iPhone v3.

Thinking about this...I like the iPhone and at $199 it is a pretty good deal.

Is the web browsing as good as they say? If so I may just get the iPhone instead of buying a new laptop. I only need basic e-mail and news stuff when I am traveling anyways.

Opinions on the browsing capability?

I know one person with an iPhone and another with the iPod Touch (same browsing capabilities except WiFi only). Both rave about how simple and intuitive it is. Email rocks and with these upgrades, apparently is even better now.

Everything AT&T SUCKS big time. We had AT&T when we lived in pensacola, but only because they bought out cingular and we weren't given a choice. Once our contract was up and we had moved up here, I dumped them very quickly. They have the worse coverage of any cell phone I've ever had. It would drop probably 1 out of every 3-4 calls. It was terrible. I'm with verizon now and it seems to be very good. I've only had a time or two that its been difficult to hear the person I was talking to.

- The camera on the current iPhone is far and away the best camera I have ever had on a cell-phone and arguably as good as a few regular cameras that I owned

- Not getting a 32-gig is a disappointment but 16-gig is fine for all iPhone users even with video needs

- AT&T service does suck but it is more then fine to fit my needs. I did find AT&T coverage to be solid in Atlanta but is terrible down here

Interestingly, the guys at Gizmodo said the reception on the new iPhone was excellent compared to the previous model. One remarked that he couldn't believe it was AT&T.

Also, this has got to be sucky news for Sprint and Samsung. They've been hyping the crap out of the Samsung Instinct (a Sprint exclusive) and showing point by point how its features beat the iPhone. For instance, this PC World article from April is titled, "What Sprint's Samsung Instinct Phone Has that the iPhone Doesn't". Four of the five advantages (3G, GPS, price, third-party apps) it talked about were gutted by the iPhone 3G announcement and the launch of the Instinct is still a week away. The only thing that it might have some advantage on (and even then only a partial one) is the ability to customize the home screen.

A few weeks ago, there was speculation that the new iPhone would have a solar panel behind the touch screen. Did that not get added?

Same here, our personal phones are T-mobile so if they carried it I would more than likely buy it.

I have a Blackjack through work and we are with AT&T (Huntsville) and the reception is awful IMO. I live a little west of Athens and you can forget talking to anyone on it and it being coherent. Now I would love to have one. As big of an Apple zealot as I am, if not for AT&T, I would have one no doubt.

I'll definitely be getting the next iPhone - I love the one I have. I don't have to worry about the cost, my company supplies my phone (and I'm the one in charge of phones at my company :P ) - but for 199 I may get my wife one.

I'm surprised at all the negativity towards ATT's coverage. Sure, their customer service sucks, but I haven't had any major issues with coverage. In fact, I switched my wife over from Verizon to ATT because the coverage was better.

A few weeks ago, there was speculation that the new iPhone would have a solar panel behind the touch screen. Did that not get added?

Now that's funny right there. If you're serious then its probably a byproduct of the secretive nature of their development - they won't release details so the fanatics come up with wild speculations about features.

Mrs. Otter bought me mine for Christmas...proof that she loves me. Alas, that means I won't be getting another phone until about 2015.
