TitanTiger 21,187
Franklin is as transparent as it gets."When someone asks me a question, I answer it," Franklin said. "That's what I expect of other people, so I should do the same." That blunt nature created some controversy last week when Franklin and popular sports-radio magnate Paul Finebaum shared a plane flight to Mobile for a charity function. During the flight, Finebaum casually asked Franklin about Alabama coach Nick Saban's policy to prevent assistant coaches from talking with reporters. Franklin was asked a question. He answered it. The Auburn assistant said he valued his freedom and said his forefathers fought for the right to speak freely. When the time came a few days later for Finebaum to write his weekly column for the Press-Register, he asked Franklin for permission to use information gathered during the flight. Franklin agreed. Drama ensued. Alabama fans soon took to the Internet and Finebaum's airwaves to denounce Franklin for his comments. They were perceived as a slight against Saban, whose popularity among the Crimson Tide faithful couldn't be more fanatical. Told that Alabama fans were angry, Franklin laughed. "So what?" he said. "I really wouldn't take a job somewhere like that. I don't need the job that badly. If Tommy (Tuberville) came in here today and told me to not talk with you all, I would stop. That's different. I already work here. I just don't see the point. What we're doing here isn't rocket science. We coach football." This is Tony Franklin. http://www.montgomeryadvertiser.com/apps/p...315/1002/sports That's hilarious. I love it. Just tell it like it is Tony. WarTiger 4,014
gotta love it... What a concept. A coach allowed to talk to the press, AND actually answering the questions that are asked. Go tony go...

Proud Tiger 4,261
The bammers who never come into contact with Nicky worship him but it's a different matter in some quarters, including inside the bama Athletic Dept. I have 1st cousin who is a long-time fanatic bama fan dating back to Bryant days. So she has seen it all. She said a lot of people who just have ordinary jobs in the AD hate Saban saying he is a real dictator who tries to emulate Napoleon. Well he is about the same size

AUslug 1
I'm liking this Tony Franklin guy more and more. I miss his type of frankess in today's world, too much "coach speak" and being pc about everything.
quietfan 233
I'd genuinely like to know how the Alabama assistants feel about about this issue, deep inside--both the concept and CTF's Finebaum interview. . . . ...Too bad they're not allowed to tell us. Those "ordinary jobs" you speak of likely disqualify them from ever coming into contact with him. If they ever were able to, perhaps they would be able to meet the Nick Saban I know and respect. I'm not saying this as a homer, either. I honestly believe he's a good person and someone that I would want my future son to play for. He cares about his players and has their best interest at heart. He's also a father figure to a lot of our guys that were raised in single parent homes. FWIW, I've never heard the first negative word uttered about Saban within our athletic department. Not the first. Saban is a good guy -- from his adopting of two children to the numerous causes he supports. As much flak as both he and Tuberville take from the opposing school's fans, I see both of them as quality people. As far as Franklin's comments, "so what?" I didn't see a big deal over them and wish that people would quit hanging on every word that is said by coaches and athletes alike. Saban does things his way and has been successful in doing so. Ditto for Tuberville. I can't see what the big deal is here.

They don't count even though they have been devoted bama fans and worked for the university long before Saban got there. Never come into contact? Dead wrong!!! My cousin tells me she passes him in the hall on a regular basis but is told never to speak to him so she doesn't break his concentration. You can rationalizre all you want to but that is just not right and I find it unbelievable that you would trash the ordinary people who work for your school while defending an overrated piece of crap!!!! I can't wait until he sticks the dagger in your heart. Excuse me but I have to go puke just thinking about what you say.

And a Bama Grad at that, He's always so easy to get along with too!!!! Or was it Win crimson. I like him too ,He is sooooo Childlike. He thinks $aban is a nice guy. Is that not just the sweetest thing. What a guy that saban is. I will bet he is kind to pets and little kid's too!
WinCrimson 61
Don't kid yourself. I didn't demean anyone with that statement. Outside of those who have direct contact with Coach Saban, people know a false stereotype. I'm not going to get into this with you because you've never met him and know nothing about him. All I will say is this -- if his hiring lit a fire under some in our athletic department, then he needs a raise. Some of them have been nothing more than dead weight -- from head football coaches, to Marie Robbins, to the old guard as a whole. If they don't like his outlook, then there is a good chance they need to change theirs. I'm not going to derail Titan's thread arguing an insignificant point with you, though. You can hold fast to your opinion while I take comfort in my fact. All is well.

That would probably be the only way you could justify this guy getting a raise.....but then again when you take a good look at it, the level of motivation in that area of purgatory you call an athletic department couldn't have really gone anywhere else but up-right??....right??? Got Shula??-know what I mean?? Where else could it go from there?? P.S. Tony Franklin is AUsome!!!
