Oklahoma State running back coach joining Auburn, says newspaper report

Posted by Charles Goldberg, Birmingham News January 02, 2009 3:43 PM

Oklahoma State assistant coach Curtis Luper will join Gene Chizik's coaching staff at Auburn, a source with knowledge of the situation told The Oklahoman on Friday.

Luper served the last four seasons at OSU as a running backs coach and assistant head coach.

His role at Auburn is currently undefined. Auburn's new offensive coordinator is Gus Malzahn who was at Tulsa this past season. Luper could not be reached for comment.

Luper is the third Auburn assistant coach known, joining offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn and defensive coach James Willis.

This is from the Oklahoma State athletic home page:

Coaching Career

Is in his fourth season as Oklahoma State's running backs coach and his second season as the team's assistant head coach for player development.

Was part of three Oklahoma State bowl teams as a player (1984-87).

With Luper coaching the Cowboy running backs in 2007, Oklahoma State led the Big 12 and ranked eighth nationally in rushing with 243.2 yards on the ground per game. Dantrell Savage earned first-team all-Big 12 honors with 115.6 rushing yards per game and eclipsed the 100-yard mark in each of his last 10 games. Savage was one of three Cowboys to average 58 yards rushing per game or more in 2007.

The 2006 season saw Luper tutor a trio of OSU running backs (Mike Hamilton, Savage and Keith Toston) to 2,000 rushing yards and 18 rushing touchdowns. All three players had at least one 100-yard game, and Savage ended the season by rushing for more than 100 yards in three of the last four games. In 2006, Oklahoma State led the Big 12 with 208 rushing yards per game (No. 7 nationally).

In his first season on the OSU staff, he coached Hamilton to a school freshman rushing record of 961 yards. Hamilton was the Big 12 Conference offensive newcomer of the year.

Coached DonTrell Moore, the Mountain West Conference's career rushing leader (3,675 yards) at New Mexico.

New Mexico's rushing attack ranked 16th nationally in 2003 with an average of 210 yards per game, including 265 rushing yards per MWC game.

In 2001, Texas A&M-Commerce finished second in the league in total defense and produced 30 takeaways. Luper coached the league's best kickoff return and coverage teams.

Personal

Luper began his career at OSU but his stay was interrupted from 1988 to 1992 when he served as an air traffic controller for the United States Army. He then completed his eligibility at Stephen F. Austin as a second-team all-Southland Conference running back in 1993. He led the team in rushing and scoring.

He earned his bachelor's degree in communications from Stephen F. Austin in 1996 and his master's degree in communications from SFA in 1998. He has completed coursework toward a doctoral degree in secondary and higher education from Texas A&M-Commerce.

A 1984 graduate of Sherman (Texas) HS, Luper captured all-state honors as a senior and was the No. 2-rated prep running back in Texas behind his Cowboy teammate, Thurman Thomas.

Luper is married to the former Nikki Echols. They have three daughters, A'rielle, Charitie and Cheyenne, and two sons, Cameron and Chancellor.

was also nominated for runningback coach of the year this year.

If this is true, Chizik continues to impress.

I agree but hope the hire was based on who CGM wants for position coaches.

WTH does that mean? Do you think CGM doesnt have input on this?

If you have Insider Access...

Curtis Luper, the assistant head coach for player development and running backs coach, is leaving Oklahoma State after four years to join the staff of newly named Auburn head coach Gene Chizik. Who is a possible replacement for Luper as the Cowboys' running backs coach?

He's also been one of the top recruiters in the Big 12....now let's go get Trooper Taylor Ok State OC as the WR Coach.

War Damn Eagle!!!!! Excellent Pick Up, IMO.

CCL also coached DonTrell Moore when he was the RB Coach at New Mexico.

Wow, great hire. Ever since Chizik has been in charge I've really had nothing to complain about. Not that it will always be that way, but it's nice while it lasts.

Oklahoma State running backs coach Curtis Luper already has a bachelor's degree, a master's in higher education and is pursuing a doctorate — something many probably didn't know.

news article on Luper!

Recruiting Coordinator? You sure? I havent seen it reported anywhere.

Brian matthews mentioned it on sports call! Think this guy is going to pull double duty! And after looking at his resume it seems he could handle it easily.

Hmmm, I think he is a great hire, just not sure with that responsibility without strong ties to the south.

From AL.com:

Oklahoma State's running game has led the Big 12 Conference in rushing the last three seasons and finished this season averaging

245.5 yard per game, according to an Auburn PR release.

I like the sound of that.

CGC is getting a major chunk of his offensive coaching from out west. I'm not concerned about getting our share of talent in the S.E., but I'm hoping we now have some pipelines to talent in the Texas/Okie corridor...in fact I'll be very disappointed if we now don't.

"The opportunity to reconnect with my mentor in Coach Chizik and have the chance to coach at a program known as `Running Back U.', was something that I could not pass up," Luper said.

Love Coach Luper's quote. War Eagle!!!

Coach Chizik coached at SFA 1992-1997 when Luper played and later coached there. So they go way back.
