Auburn confirms Boulware will be special teams coordinator

Former Iowa State assistant coach Jay Boulware will follow his former boss to Auburn, becoming the special teams coordinator for new coach Gene Chizik.

Auburn confirmed the hiring in a news release this afternoon.

"I've had the good fortune of working with Coach Chizik the last two seasons and I am thrilled to be joining his staff at Auburn," Boulware said in the release. "Auburn has a wealth of history and tradition and combined with the outstanding staff Coach Chizik has already put together with Gus Malzahn, Curtis Luper and James Willis, I can't wait to get started."

Boulware coached at Texas, Northern Illinois, Arizona, Stanford and Utah before coming to Iowa State. He has five years experience serving as a special teams coach, including two years at ISU.

"I'm very familiar with Jay and we are extremely pleased to have him coming on board with us at Auburn," Chizik said. "Jay has a great work ethic, a strong knowledge of special teams, and he is a very good recruiter. He is a welcomed addition to our staff that we are putting in place."

Boulware is a 1996 graduate of Texas.

War Eagle and welcome to Auburn, Coach Boulware!!

He's also had coaching stops at Northern Illinois, where he recruited Michael Turner, Arizona, Stanford and Utah.

Should be a good hire, even with inferior athletes Iowa State finished at 12th in kickoff return average and 24th in field goal kicking, their average yardage per punt was actually higher than Durst's this past year but the net average was less (probably due to inferior athletes on the coverage units). He's the uncle of Peter Boulware.

Any one else having trouble getting excited about any assistants from ISU?

NO...it depends on the coach and the coach's background. Boulware seems to know what he is doing based on his previous experience and success. WDE

Ok not impressed. Maybe he's an outstanding recruiter.

What exactly are you looking for in a special teams coordinator? I'm just happy to have someone dedicated only to special teams instead of having it as the side job. Maybe our kickers won't be such head cases now.

Well it's pretty easy to get excited about Willis, Yox, Malzahn, Luper, and Trooper. Nothing about Boulware stands out to me. Sorry I'm not head over heels about every coaching hire but I think it's fair to at least question the decisions being made. Again, if some one wants to share the home run stories about Boulware I'm missing...by all means.

Not every hire is going to be an absolute HR...Boulware is being hired as a ST coach which is probably one of the least significant roles (not that I'm implying that ST are insignificant). When he was at Utah their ST was the best in their conference and his ST at Iowa State was strong as well considering how bad their team was. He is an upgrade over Gran in the regard, so it is nice to finally have a legit ST coach.

What is more interesting is that all three of Luper/Taylor/Boulware have strong connections to the state of Texas...

This is what I'm excited about...oh, along with the other stuff above of course.

Where are all the former Auburn players he promised to get on his staff? Are we not capable of getting Garner, Searles, Rocker or any of them? It appears so.

No. ISU is a train wreck of a program from top to bottom. It was before Chizik and will be after Chizik. He couldn't do much with it in only two years.

CGC is a smart cookie. He knows good football players and coaches. He'll bring in what we need....whether from ISU or MSU, he'll get what we need.

What promise? Got a link? All I saw was a bunch of posters hoping/ speculating that some of Dye's former players would be on the staff, some others saying Chizik was hired because Dye could call the shots on hiring the assistant coaches, and others worrying that we wouldn't be diverse enough with all the old Auburn players.

So far, it looks like CGC is in charge, NOT Dye, and that's a great thing.

No. Chizik knows who can coach and who can't. So far he's put together an impressive staff. Do you have some solid information that Boulware is a lousy coach? If not, well.......

Some people will never be satisfied. Who did you want Norman Schwarzkopf? If you need to do research on a coach there is a great service called GOOGLE!

Good points and thanks for the info. It will be interesting to see if this staff can make any inroads in Texas in the coming years. I can't remember that last decent recruit we had from that state*.

The ultimate success or failure of the Chizik era will depend on how many inroads his staff can make in Alabama, Georgia and Florida. An occasional player from Texas or Canada might be a little boost, but the nuts and bolts of any Auburn team will be from the above three states.

Now that would be an accomplishment, having the first non-head-case kickers in recorded football history! :)

I think if we are to be a national mainstay, we have to get players from all over the southeast, southwest, and mid-sections of the country. Diversity is the key to Auburn being a national player year in and year out. We have to be a common factor for kids all over the nation at some point. Texas is just a state that has a lot of players who could play in the SEC, but get overlooked and go on to play in the lower halkf of the Big 12 or a WAC school. Texas and Oklahoma can only take so many.

I want Auburn to have players from all over.
